Slovakia is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Hitchhiking here seems not to be so easy. People rarely tend to stop, when you are standing at the road with a sign. So it is best to ask directly at gas stations. Some, but not many, speak English or German. Russian is more widely understood, but not necessarily liked.

Young people can speak English and it's not so bad with English in bigger towns. Of course in villages it can become difficult to understand each other. Hitchhiking in Slovak is 'autostop'.

Someone wrote (Aug.2009):

"Two weeks ago I was in Slovakia. I was at a gas station asking people for a lift. After 2 hours some cops arrived and told me that hitchhiking in Slovakia is illegal (everywhere!) and drivers can get a 100 euro fine (new law). After 4 hours the cops left the station and a Czech person took me. He told me that this is true..."

There is no law about hitchike at slovakia. It is not true. Man have to wait for a few minutes and get a car. Like other countries. Dont be afraid of hithike here. Just come and try.

You can find a lot of offers for hitchhikers at stopar.sk (available in English).
