Hitchhike to Paris on 888...08082008...

The History of the 888 Project

First, there was the "TOKYO" hitchhiking sign that two hitchhikers drew to go back from Rotterdam to Lille... There were the free plane tickets to "Tokyo" that Erik Van Loon offered to the two hitchhikers. But they called him back too late...

But N-O-W: the "Tokyo" project is getting bigger...and bigger... We need you all to organize a hitchhiking race to the Eiffel Tower from every single country in Europe. Let's organize the official "European Hitchhiking Day" together!

We need you to show to the world that hitchhiking is a safe and fun social means of transportation...

The checkpoint cities: Ring1

Hitchhikers who wish to participate in our race and who live further away than the checkpoint cities, can start from those on 080808. Contact us if you would like to be a city organizer for any of the following cities:

Starting from more than 1000ks away

You can of course start your European hitchhiking event from further away than the checkpoint cities. You are free to start from wherever you want.

Help from Paris on 888: Hosting

We need to contact the Paris community in order to host all the Europeans who are coming to Paris.

Help From Paris on 888: Call Center

This subgroup was designed to find 2 teams who can work on D-Day- 888- to answer hitchhikers' phonecalls. What these two teams will need to do to help the 8 8 8 project:

  • Have a landline phone number -Be at home on the 8.8.8 throughout the whole day and evening
  • Know the hitchhiking spots on a circumference of 200 ks around Paris
  • Know the Paris transportation system so that the hitchhikers who are lost can easily reach the Palais de Tokyo
  • Have a list of people who can host (they do not necessarily need to be on C.S. on H.C.
  • we will establish this list and send it to the two teams)

Art Project 1: "Hitchhiking" exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo on 8 8 8

Inspired by the hitchhiking spirit?

The 8 8 8 project primarily seeks to get hitchhiking recognized as an authentic means of transportation. In order to reach this goal we also need artists to give way to their inspiration... You can NOW submit your painting, patchwork, sculpture or photo-- in relation to hitchhiking--to the Palais de Tokyo! The exhibition will be launched on the arrival of the hitchhikers...on 8 8 8...

Art Project 2: "Hitchhiking" artwork made of photos of our drivers

The Concept

  • Each hitchhiker can feel free to take photos of each of their drivers...
  • Once they arrive to the Palais de Tokyo, we will upload them unto a computer...
  • We will then print them out on a given format...

The Goal

Create an artwork that fits on the first piece of lawn located south of the Eiffel Tower.

How to hitchhike out of Paris

This subgroup was designed to help hitchhikers to leave Paris with their thumb up! You can find all the spots to leave the city on the following page: See Paris.
