Schleswig-Holstein is a German Bundesland located in the north of Germany. To the north it borders to Denmark, in the south to Niedersachsen and Hamburg and in the south-east to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
As a rural region, its inhabitants are quite friendly and have a "live and let live" attitude towards most aspects of life. They will be happy to help you out, but are somewhat wary of strangers until they get to know you better, so honesty is key here. It is rare that you will be judged for an open lifestyle. As for hitchhiking, it is becoming more and more popular again even for commuters as official hitchhiking spots are being introduced (similar to the Netherlands). They are usually called "Trampstellen" or "Mitfahrbänke" and can be found at some regular bus stops.
