For many Hitchwiki is a great project!

Hitchhiking is freedom. I have spent days and days feeling free, 1000s of miles, 100s of gas stations, over a 1000 people helped me out on my travels. Sometimes I felt frustration but I know that everything would work out fine. Hitchhiking is all or nothing. Sometimes you wait for hours and hours, and then there's the moment of euphoria, when you finally found your ride, and your driver is this amazingly friendly person with great stories. Life is good.

Wikis are different. Radical creation and distribution of information. Transforming la Société du Spectacle into la Société des Contributeurs. Even the smallest change can inspire others to add even more. No work is ever lost and some wikis are a haven in internet. Hitchwiki is one of these pearls. And even more, Hitchwiki is a way to give back to the world, to inspire others to go out, stick out their thumb and feel a little bit freer.

Some guy I met in Vienna was very impressed of my hitchhiking trips and called it unlimited freedom. I can't think of a term that describes it better. You can plan your hitchhiking trips very well, but it's more fun if you don't. When you start in the morning, you never know where you will be at the end of the day, sometimes you even end up in another country than expected. A lot of times, when I woke up in the morning, I had to think for a while until I remembered where I am now. When I realized this it always made me happy.
Hitchhiking is probably the best way, to learn about the people, the culture, the life and the history of the country your are travelling. You meet so many people, many different kinds of people and everyone tells you another story from his life or his country.

The more people accept hitchhiking as a common way of travel, the easier it will be. That's why I want to convince as many people as possible that hitchhiking is a great thing.

There are quite a lot of useful websites about hitchhiking on the net, but most of them never get updated. Hitchwiki gets a few changes every day and it's growing slowly, but constantly.
There is no better way than a wiki to collect lots of information and share them with everyone in an efficient way. Many people only write a few lines and never come back. But since hundreds of people are doing this, this wiki will always grow and will always increase it's value.

Maybe I haven't hitchhiked as much as some people here, but I've got some impressive mileage too. For now, all I've seen is my own country, and that's why I'm contributing here, I want other people to come and see the sights and meet the people here in Romania.

I've been hitchhiking professionally (to say so) for about 4 years, totaling some 15,000km. And I can remember almost every trip I ever took by thumbing. Hitchhiking is a life experience, it's freedom, it's socializing, it's living at the full. For me, it's almost a drug. Sometimes, when I'm really bored, I get on the outskirts of my city, and hitchhike. Going nowhere, not even hoping for a ride. Just siting there, holding my thumb out, it's a feeling I can't compare with anything.

It's a way of life...

Of course all starts with passion for hitchhiking and sharing...

Hitchwiki is one of very unique projects, that give me a true feeling of equality, openness and collaboration. She is based on well understood self-management. Gives space for contributions, is open for all kinds of ideas and provides a good structure. Good structure is one that allows organising thinking, is easily accessible/understandable, facilitate changes and development, yet impose no limits.

Hitchwiki is personal, real and human. She likes progress.
She asks silly questions, like for example "why we work for her?"
And ditchwiki likes to laugh a lot!

That is all HitchWiki and that's why I love her:)

Hitchwiki is a positive project which has got to move. Hitchhiking as a way of travel in itself is great and could / should play a more imminent role in our society, when we are eager to search for improving for example social cohesion of a society as a whole or the quest to control pollution caused by irresponsible private use of motorvehicles.

Sharing is the key. Indeed, these experiences gained by thumbers all around the world should not vanish into the abyss of dissolution but rather gather here on these wiki pages which are free to be edited by anyone from anywhere. I share my knowledge and I receive a knowledge of someone else - we all gain something from the process. Happy to help - and happy to be enriched.

I have yet to have a hitchhiking trip since I’ve found Hitchwiki, but I’m sure the tips here will be very useful the next time I thumb. So by contributing to this wiki, I’m paying in advance for its benefit – paying in hitchhiker’s way, of course, with no money involved.

A couple of years ago, when I was looking for hitchhiking spots on the internet I had to check several websites to find everything I needed to know. The people I knew where using different sites to dump their advice, adding comments or editing the sites was not always possible and you had to go through a lot of information to abstract from the different experiences. I hope that the structure of the hitchwiki is helping to collect as much useful information as possible and to keep it short and clear at the same time − that's why I contribute *here*.

While making my first steps in the wiki I also realised that the sharing of information not only about good spots but also about strategies, safety and the things happening around hitchhiking is also something that has not been done in an organised way yet (as far as I know). It rather happened from person to person which is also a good way but in this way your information is limited to the people you meet. So, setting up this wiki is also about giving access to valuable tips&tricks for everyone (who has a computer and can read these pages... :o).

I was thinking and talking about hitchhiking before I did it for real the first time. Everybody in my environment told me not to do it, "its dangerous", "we will get stuck somewhere", you know all these helpful guides which never hitched on their own. Then I searched the internet for information about hitchhiking, first saw the site of Veit Kühne then the one from Ludovic Hubler, then the site of abgefahren e.V. They, especially the storys from Ludovic made me go out! Today after I have hitched some kilometers I want to share my knowledge too and maybe make some new people to go out and give it a try. Also I want to give people new to hitchhiking the chance to explore this new way of travelling in a safe environment. That's why i add info and that's why I work for abgefahren e.V.

I am digging the shit out working here. I'm from the U.S. and that's where I have traveled. Whole states don't have pages! I get to write whatever I believe is true for so much of the US- if you're a hitchhiker from the US you should totally sign up and start working here, so much fun to write 3 sentence snap judgments of a place and have that be the page- I find snap judgments of a place are often revealed to be incredibly true.

This website is what I wished Wikipedia was when I was on Wikipedia: Free! A frontier! Not 10,000 bullshit admins saying if you don't want to learn the exact way to puntuate and cite everything we don't want your contributions!

you?

We love to read about the reasons you work on Hitchwiki!
