<map lat='62.3116653494161' lng='27.889480590820312' zoom='11' view='0' float='right'/> Varkaus is a city in Finland.
Hitching in
The highway number 5 goes right through Varkaus and since it's a pretty small town, all the hh-spots are easy to reach. If you're coming from north-east (road #23) and being dropped off at the eastern part of the town, you might have to walk a couple of kilometers through the town to reach either the other end of the road #23 or the highway number 5. Just follow the street called Taipaleentie or the "Mikkeli/Jyväskylä/Kuopio"-signs. And the other way round: coming from south/west/north heading to east and being dropped off by the highway #5, walk through the city following the "Joensuu"-signs to reach the road #23.
I think walking that couple of kilometers is worth of it, otherwise you might end up waiting for a ride for some while just to be dropped off a few kilometers later!
Hitchhiking out
All directions
There are 2 service stations, (both open 24h, restaurant, free toilets, moderate priced grocery store) in the crossing of highway #5 and #23, where you can ask the drivers. These are pretty good places to ask rides to all directions. You can also try hitchhiking on-ramps.
Heading West
If you're going west towards Jyväskylä and Tampere, you could also try hitchhiking in a bus stop next to the smaller petrol station.
Heading East/North-East
When you're on the street Taipaleentie (see "Hitching in" above), walk past the sawmill and you can start hitchhiking on the roadside right after the first crossing to right (there might even be a bus stop if I remember right?).
