Adygea (Adyghe: Адыгэ Республик) is a republic within the Russian Federation, part of the Southern Federal District. The territory of the republic is entirely surrounded by Krasnodar Krai.
The capital is Maykop, located 1,650 km south of Moscow. Hitchhiking from Moscow to Maykop takes about 30 hours (via Rostov and Krasnodar); by train it takes about 36 hours.
Hitchhiking in
- From Rostov-on-Don (Option A): Take the federal highway M4 "Don", pass the city of Korenovsk, immediately after which turn left onto federal road A160. Continue through Ust-Labinsk and Belorechensk to reach Maykop. Distance from Rostov-on-Don to Korenovsk is 220 km, from Korenovsk to Maykop is 130 km.
- From Rostov-on-Don (Option B): Follow the M4 to the stanitsa (village) Pavlovskaya, where the federal highway R217 "Kavkaz" begins. Continue to the city of Armavir, after which take a right turn towards Labinsk. The road leads directly to Maykop, the capital of Adygea. This route is also convenient if traveling from Mineralnye Vody or Stavropol. Distance from Rostov-on-Don to Armavir is 300 km, from Armavir to Maykop is 120 km.
- From Krasnodar: Follow the M4 to Adygeysk, then continue towards Ryazanskaya. From there, take the road to Belorechensk and then road A160 to Maykop. Distance from Krasnodar to Adygeysk is 30 km, from Adygeysk to Belorechensk is 70 km, from Belorechensk to Maykop is 30 km.
- From Apsheronsk: Coming from the Black Sea coast towards Maykop, you will pass through Apsheronsk (unless you detour to Belorechensk). There are two main ways to Apsheronsk: from Dzhubga via Goryachy Klyuch and Saratovskaya; or from Tuapse via Khadzhyensk. To continue to Maykop, use the southern exit from Apsheronsk towards Guamka and Mezmay. The landmark is the Convent of the Icon of the Mother of God "Indestructible Wall". Distance from Apsheronsk to Maykop is 45 km.
- There is a route from Mezmay to the checkpoint of the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve in Lago-Naki and then to the stanitsa Dakhovskaya, or through Temnoleskaya to Dakhovskaya and Kamennomostsky. This is a slow, mostly forest dirt road best for those hiking from the Black Sea coast. From the Lago-Naki plateau, descend via Partizanskaya Polyana to Guzeripl, from where you can leave for Maykop. The road Guzeripl-Khamyshkhi-Dakhovskaya-Kamennomostsky-Maykop is paved and has beautiful views. Distance from Guzeripl to Maykop is 85 km.
- The road being restored from stanitsa Nizhegorodskaya to Mezmay is under construction (as of spring 2016). It is passable, but the last 7-8 km before Mezmay are unpaved. From Mezmay to Temnoleskaya, it is only possible in off-road vehicles. Entry into the Lago-Naki area requires coordination with local forest rangers—unauthorized entry to the reserve is punishable.
