Tuapse (Russian: Туапсе) is a city in Russia, located on the Black Sea coast of Krasnodar Krai.

  • It is a major port on the Black Sea and recognized as a City of Military Glory (since 2008).
  • It is the largest transport hub between Novorossiysk and Sochi. The Transcaucasian railway line terminates here.
  • When traveling from Abkhazia and Sochi, Tuapse is the best place to transfer from the electric train to the highway, as the route to Goryachy Klyuch and Krasnodar by road is three times faster than by rail.
  • When heading from Krasnodar to Sochi, it makes sense to transfer to an electric train ("Lastochka") in Tuapse to avoid hitchhiking on narrow winding coastal roads and traffic jams in resort towns during summer. Attempting to reach Sochi by road will likely take significantly longer than by train, even if you manage to hitch a direct ride to Abkhazia.
  • If your goal is a sea holiday, it's recommended to take the electric train a couple of stops away from the Tuapse port, for example, to Shepsi, or by road towards Gelendzhik to settlements like Nebug, Agoy, or Olginka.

Getting in without hitchhiking

  • The nearest operating airport is in Adler. There are direct "Lastochka" trains right to the airport.
  • Train station is fenced and guarded. Address: ul. Pobedy, building 2. There are several 24-hour fast food kiosks in the station square, but to return to the station you'll need to pass through security.
  • The bus station is at ul. Marshala Zhukova, 6, Tel. +7 (86167) 2-28-46. Apart from routes along the coast, there are buses to Astrakhan, Voronezh, Yerevan, Maykop, Rostov-on-Don, Sevastopol, Simferopol, Elista, and Yalta.
  • The sea port currently does not provide any passenger services. There are no ferries to Turkey, Crimea, Bulgaria, or elsewhere.

Hitchhiking out

East towards Khadzhyensk and Maykop (via a mountainous, partly unpaved road)

  • There is a traffic police checkpoint at the 9th km. Buses: 144, 165, 171, 172, 174, 175, 176, 177, 179.
  • If buses are no longer running, there is a well-lit position at the junction of Krasnodarskaya and Sochinskaya highways, just over a kilometer on foot from the train station.
  • The road via Shaumyan serves as an alternative to traffic jams near Dzhubga and Goryachy Klyuch during summer.

North towards Gelendzhik and Novorossiysk via M4

  • There are no good spots! Along the highway there are either solid fences or barriers. There is a small bay near a grocery store at Novorossiyskoye shosse, 42. Nearest bus stop is "Most." From the bus station, take buses 162a, 163, 166, 168, or 169.
  • At night, you can try departing from the triangle near the overpass above the railway.

South along the coast towards Sochi

  • There are no good spots. The road winds through mountains and ravines and both sides are built up. You can try hitching at bus stops or gas station bays, but between them there are usually fences or barriers. The abundance of local transport and heavy summer resort traffic can make hitchhiking difficult.

  • It is possible to camp in your own tent on the beach at Shepsi or any other station towards Sochi, but expect noise from passing trains throughout the night.
  • In coastal settlements towards Gelendzhik, there are paid campgrounds, though in summer they can be noisy, drunken, or expensive. Check real reviews from guests.
