The city hosts an airport that connects the region with other parts of Russia, a major railway junction (North Caucasian Railway) on the Armavir—Prokhladnaya line, and is situated on the federal motorway M-29 Caucasus. From here, one can travel to the resort cities of Zheleznovodsk, Pyatigorsk, Yessentuki, Kislovodsk, and the city of Lermontov. Mineralnye Vody lies at the foot of Mount Zmeyka, much of which is occupied by the Beshtaugorsky forest massif, with part of it comprising rocky cliffs and quarries connected by old serpentine roads. In good weather, the peaks of Mount Elbrus can be seen from the city.
After the closure of many airports in southern Russia, Mineralnye Vody Airport became a major air hub (on par with Adler) for budget flights to southern countries and regions. Hitchhikers come here from central Russia to catch affordable flights to the South Caucasus, the Lycian Way in Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Central Asian countries.
