Puttgarden is Germany's gate to Scandinavia. There is a car/train ferry port with ferries to Rødby in Denmark.
In 2007, Germany and Denmark decided to build a 19km long bridge from Puttgarden to Rødby, which will be finished in 2018.
Hitching Out
North towards Rødby, Denmark
Usually hitchhikers can get over for free because drivers only pay for their vehicle. If you are searching for a lift you should tell people about this possibility – otherwise they might not take you with them just because they think it's too complicated or they'll have to pay. Every vehicle can take 9 passengers with it, so there might be place for you anywhere.
You can probably easily find a ride to Copenhagen or Malmö in Sweden.
South towards Lübeck, Hamburg
If you're coming from Denmark, you should try to find a car on the ferry that might bring you somewhere on the highway. If not, it's quite hard to get a ride at the ferry port, because all cars coming from the ferry are going directly onto the street, and there's not much space to stop because of roadworks. Then you might walk around 1–2 km along the roadworks to a gas station, where you might have more luck. But normally the best way is to ask people on the ferry.
