Murom (Russian: Муром) is the third largest city in Vladimir Oblast. It is one of the oldest cities in Russia, located on the left bank of the Oka River, 137 km from Vladimir, near the border with Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Murom is a major railway junction on the Gorky Railway line between Moscow and Kazan. Like Vladimir, Murom is well-suited for a "weekend hitchhiking trip" or a practice trip from Moscow, with or without an overnight stay. You can also leisurely explore Murom itself, stay overnight, and head out on the fast highway towards Kazan the next morning.

Hitchhiking out
East towards Arzamas or west towards Vladimir on the toll M12 motorway
There is the best chance to get a ride on the M12 if you hitchhike at the exit from the roadside rest area with a gas station. This is located at the 313th km, northwest of Murom. About a kilometer further south is the "10 km" station on the Kovrov-Murom railway and the village of Lopatino, which you can reach by bus #11 (it runs only five times a day). If you miss both the bus and the local train, you can hitchhike to Lopatino via Vladimirskoye highway. You can also take any minibus or bus towards Vladimir or Moscow up to the turn to Lopatino; the stop is called "Shkolnaya."
East towards Vladimir on the free Vladimirskoye highway
Buses 10 and 10a go to the Nezhilovka district; right after it is the junction with the bypass. At the end of the junction there is a free shoulder and streetlights. The first village out of town is Kovarditsy. You can get there by city bus #11 and get off at the turn to Lopatino, or by an intercity bus to Moscow or Vladimir. On the way out of Kovarditsy there is a gentle left turn with a wide shoulder, but no lights.
North towards Gorokhovets and Nizhny Novgorod
The first stop after leaving the city is "Dmitrievskaya Sloboda," which you can reach by city buses 8 and 15, or several intercity buses. North of this district is the junction with the Murom bypass. It's best to walk past this and hitchhike north at the end of the junction. The guardrail ends at the end of the acceleration lane; there are no streetlights.
South towards Ryazan
The best spot is the intersection of Milenkovskoye highway and the Murom bypass. Get off bus #20 near Verbovskoe cemetery and walk along the bypass slightly forward to the intersection. The guardrails end with the bypass, streetlights are available. You can also take bus #20 to the turn to Staroe Ratovo. Hitchhike at the stop by Murom cemetery; beyond that, it becomes forest and hitchhiking becomes worse.
