Greifswald is a city in Germany.

Greifswald is a small student city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with about 54,000 inhabitants, of which around 12,000 are students. The character of the city is shaped by its large student population as well as its proximity to the Baltic Sea and the islands of Rügen and Usedom. Despite being relatively small, the city offers a substantial cultural scene, especially in and around the historical city center. This includes the Pomeranian State Museum, Greifswald Cathedral, and the museum harbor, as well as student pubs, clubs, living projects, and numerous subcultural events and concerts.

Hitchhiking out

West towards Rostock/Wismar/Lübeck/Hamburg (via A20)

Option 1 - Oil petrol station (Am Neuen Friedhof 1)

A very easy and perfect spot for hitchhiking is the Oil petrol station at Am Neuen Friedhof 1, directly on Grimmer Straße leading out of Greifswald and towards the A20. You can reach this spot easily from the main station by taking the pedestrian underpass to the right of the station building, crossing the street at the parking lot, turning right and following the road out of the city. The petrol station will appear on the right side after about a 7-minute walk. Alternatively, use bus lines 1, 20, 6, or 4 to the stop "Neuer Friedhof".

Option 2 - Grimmer Straße (various entry ramps)

For "old-school" hitchhikers, it's also a good option to stand at one of the many driveways on Grimmer Straße. The cars drive slowly, see you from afar, and often stop.

East towards Eldena/Lubmin/Beach

Option 1 - Bus stop at Platz der Freiheit (Europakreuzung)

If you're near the city center, a good spot is the bus stop at Platz der Freiheit (Europakreuzung) at the start of Wolgaster Straße. The cars can see you well in advance here. A sign is helpful.

Option 2 - Bus stop "Volksstadion" on Wolgaster Straße

Another option is the bus stop "Volksstadion" along Wolgaster Straße, accessible by lines 6, 7, or 20.

South/Southeast towards Neubrandenburg/Berlin (via A20)

Option 1 - Roundabout at Gützkower Landstraße/Schönwalder Landstraße

The best spot is probably the roundabout at the intersection of Gützkower Landstraße and Schönwalder Landstraße. Cars drive slowly, and you catch all outgoing traffic towards the A20 Berlin/Poland. There is a small bay just after the roundabout where cars can pull over. The bus stop "Herrenhufen" is right at the roundabout and can be reached from the central bus station (ZOB) by line 1. It is also easily walkable in about 15 minutes.

Option 2 - Shell petrol station on Gützkower Landstraße

A less ideal but usable option is the Shell petrol station on Gützkower Landstraße, slightly towards the city from the roundabout. The advantage is you can speak to drivers directly; the disadvantage is that only part of the traffic to the A20 passes by here. It can be reached by crossing the tracks at the station and then heading left over the roundabout bridge; then follow the road for about 10 minutes.

  • Note: The next motorway service area towards Berlin is only after 175 km on the A11, so it's advisable to look for a direct lift to Berlin. Along the way, there are rest stops with toilets, but these are less frequented than service stations.

North towards Stralsund/Rügen Island (via B105)

Option 1 - Stralsunder Straße (at the museum harbor and bridge northwards)

Stand on Stralsunder Straße heading north, ideally with a sign. After the bridge at the museum harbor, follow the street north; there are several parking areas where cars can stop and pick you up.
