Jordan border crossing

I heard of different stories, some hitchhikers were able to walk over to Ramthar, others just took a cheap taxi over the border. Also information on the crossing would be nice, aren't there also some 4 km of noman's-land between the checkpoints? And, was it able to get a Jordan visa at the border :)?
