This article refers to Guinea-Conakry. See also Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.

In the Fouta Djallon in the north, the main roads can be hitched either with the help of a military/police checkpoint or by walking out of the town limits - people might even offer rides without being asked simply due to the rarity of seeing a backpack-ladden traveller strolling along the side of the road. However due to the state of the Guinean economy few people have personal vehicles, so when rides come they are often from big, ancient transport trucks with no windshield.

The smaller dirt roads that lead to the interior of the region are almost invariably in terrible condition and are rarely used by anything but motorcycles and the occasional taxi. That said, if you are traveling solo most motorcycles that aren't packed with stuff or a second (or fourth) person will offer a ride. Bicycles and donkey carts are also a good option.
