Hitching Out
West towards North Wales & the Holyhead ferry
Almost all Liverpool traffic heading this way will be taking the A550 (Welsh Road) rather than the M53 which is for heading south. You need to get across the Mersey to Birkenhead through the tunnels, then down the A41 until it crosses the M53 past Junction 5 at a place called Hooton. Hitching the M53 from the city centre is a complete headache & not recommended. By public transport you can get to the A550 by taking a bus down the A41, or by train to Hooton station then turning right onto Hooton road, then right down the A41 until you reach the turn-off. The A550 is unfortunately extremely narrow & there are very few sites for people to pull in (one small one is behind a church), but given the large volume of traffic that is going your way all in a single lane, you should get on your way (we did in about 15 mins).

Other Useful Info
Being Liverpool, you may be the target both of freezing winds & mockery from the locals (mockery is Liverpool's primary sport). Both will make you build character if you let them, so try & avoid that.
