The Canadian capital city is located in its territory just at the border with Quebec. The provincial capital but also a country's metropole is Toronto.
Ontario is the longest province to cross during a journey from east to west as it is the only province in the country that is actually more wide than high. Crossing Ontario by car takes more than 24h non-stop.
Hitchhiking in Ontario is legal : http://www.digihitch.com/article1448.html Keep in mind that this means you must solicit rides while standing on the shoulder and NOT the road way.
