Tula (Russian: Тула) is a city in Russia, located 160 km south of Moscow, and is the administrative center of Tula Oblast.

Known for its samovars, gingerbread, gunsmiths, and a very confusing beltway (M2).

Hitchhiking out

North towards Moscow via M2

  • The farthest position: Bus 159 to Nikolskie Vyselki. This is already past the beltway junction. Return to the junction, slightly east you’ll find a petrol station with a paid toilet and shower.
  • Bus 157 to Khomyakovo, get off at the turn from the highway, stop "Malakhovo".
  • City bus 36 to the "Krasnye Vorota" stop, then walk forward a bit to the city exit sign and thumb. This spot is lit at night, and cars are moving slowly after the railway crossing. (This spot is not on the M2 itself, but at the exit from Tula.)

South towards Kursk via M2

  • Junction of M2 and Odoyevskoye highway. Buses 71, 72, 158, 174, 178, 182 to the "Dachi-2" stop. Thumb after the traffic light.
  • Police post at 192 km on M2. Bus 181 from Tula's bus station. Ask to stop at the police post or just past the "Sady Oktava-5" stop.

Northeast towards Venyov (on M4), Mikhaylov, Ryazan via R132

  • Bus 12 to the last stop, the village of Medvenka.
  • Bus 100 to the village of Anishino.
  • Bus 168 directly to Venyov. Stop before the junction with M4 – "Dachi Vesna".

Southeast towards Novomoskovsk via "Novomoskovsk Highway" (R140)

  • Bus 1 to the stop "City Cemetery No. 3". Walk back to the highway and thumb opposite the city sign.
  • Bus 13A to the turn to Petelino. Thumb after the traffic light.

Northwest towards Kaluga via R132

  • You can leave by routes 30, 35, 09. There is a stop near "Metro" there. Traffic is heavy, but rides are hard to get. You need to cross the junction for Moscow, Voronezh, Kharkov, and Kaluga. After it there is a petrol station where you're more likely to get picked up.
  • Bus 10L goes to Inshinsky settlement.
