Hitchhiking out

North towards Moscow

Option 1 - Via Tatarenkovo turn

Take marshrutka (minibus) No. 72, which ends in the village of Tatarenkovo. Ask the driver to stop at the turn to the village, then walk 500-600 meters north towards the traffic police post (GAI). After the post, keep walking 700-800 meters until you see a gas station on the left; at night and in the evening this is a good spot because the road is lit. During the day, go 300-400 meters further after the gas station; on the right side, you’ll see a bus stop – it’s better to hitchhike just before the stop, where the acceleration lane begins. If you’re leaving late when marshrutkas have stopped, you can take buses No. 18 or 43 to the turn to the village of Kosinovo, then walk to the GAI post (it’s about 1.5 km further than from Tatarenkovo). Last bus No. 18 leaves at 22:10. If you miss the bus, go to the Northern Cemetery and walk from there north about 5 km to the spot. Don’t take buses or marshrutkas ending at “Severny settlement” (“поселок Северный”) – from there there’s no way to reach highway M2; going there is a dead end.

Option 2 - Via North Bus Station

You can reach the North bus station, buy a ticket for a suburban bus headed north (destinations: Fatezh, Razinkovo, N. Medveditsa). Buses are infrequent; approximate times: 5:30, 7:30, 9:10, 11:55, 12:45, 13:15, 13:40, 15:25, 17:10, 17:15, 19:00. Plus: the bus drops you directly at the hitchhiking spot.

Option 3 - Marshrutka to "Abkhazia Cafe"

Take marshrutka No. 254, 267, or 270 to their terminus at "Abkhazia Cafe". Walk 30 meters, and you can start hitchhiking traffic heading north on the bypass road. This is also suitable for those passing through Kursk from Belgorod to Moscow – take route 270 from the city edge and get off directly at the spot. Disadvantages: waiting for the marshrutka may take time and you miss drivers exiting via the northern exit from Kursk.

South towards Belgorod

  • Option 1: Take a marshrutka to Magistralny Prospekt, get out at Pivzavod or Hippodrome where the marshrutka turns left. The road to Belgorod goes straight.
  • Option 2: Take a marshrutka to Volokno, then walk a bit to the bypass. Hitchhike to the left.
  • Option 3: Take a rare marshrutka "Selikhovy dvory" to the village on the highway.

Southeast towards Voronezh

  • The R-298 highway from Kursk to Borisoglebsk is narrow, with only 60 cm of asphalt shoulder; be careful. The first hitchhiking spot is right after the GAI post. To get there, take a bus or marshrutka to the final stops "Zhukov Settlement" or "Khalino Settlement" and ask the driver to stop after the police post. Space is tight for vehicles to stop.
  • The next spot is 1.5 km further, just after the turn to Zhukov. There is a traffic light and a bus stop; after the traffic light cars move slowly, but stopping space is still limited.
  • A good spot is at the 16th km marker of the R-298 in the village of Klyukva, at the end of a downhill climb after a small stream. You can get there by marshrutka from the bus station via Ploshchad Perkalskogo, Stantsionnaya and Soyuznaya streets, or by bus Kursk-Krivets from the bus station, or on foot from the Zhukov turn (about 3 km). Marshrutkas going to "Klyukva boarding school" end far from R-298; check with the driver where they go.

Southwest towards Sumy (Ukraine)

Take a marshrutka or tram to "Agregatnaya (APZ-20)", then ask locals the way to the bypass. On the bypass you will see a road sign.

Access to the Bypass

Take a marshrutka to "Abkhazia Cafe"; it drops you at the middle of the bypass.

Transit through the city

  • Oryol - Voronezh: strictly through the city. You need to transfer at Ploshchad Perkalskogo.
  • Voronezh - Belgorod: also via the city. There is a bypass at the city edge; traffic is weak, but some cars do take you via the city.
  • Belgorod - Oryol: there is a good bypass. If you don’t want to walk, marshrutkas run from Triumphal Arch (KPK, GAI) to Magistralny Prospekt, or Triumphal Arch (KPK, GAI) to Selykhovy Dvory (better).
