Hitchhiking out

Northwest towards Ryazan and Moscow via M5

  • Exit checkpoint at the intersection of M5 and Victory Avenue. The nearest stop is "Ulitsa Ulyanovskaya", served by buses #30, 420, 53E, 66; trolleybuses #6 and 9; and shared taxis (marshrutkas) #13, 2A, 25, 27, 30, 31, 68Yu, 81, 89. Right after the checkpoint there's a turn to the "Oktyabrsky" district, reached by marshrutka #25. From the railway station, you can reach this exit: use the underpass to the bus station, cross the road, and take bus 66. After you pass the "airplane" monument, prepare to get off.
  • You can take a suburban train to Ramzai station and walk through the village to the highway.

East towards Syzran and Samara via M5

  • Exit checkpoint at the intersection of Chaadaev Street and the "Ural" highway (M5). Bus stop "Elevator" is 800 meters east; reachable by buses #157, 158, 159, and marshrutkas #12 and 156.
  • It is not recommended to hitchhike from the Arbekovo area towards Chelyabinsk: there are consecutive bad spots. Instead, go to the "Golden Cockerel" café, served by marshrutkas 5, 5k, 14, 14k, 166-169.
  • Take bus 11 to the "Sady-2" stop; the highway is 50 m away. Suburban marshrutkas head toward Chemodanovka and Kizhevatovo.
  • You can also take a suburban train to Chaadaevka station, near the highway.

North towards Saransk, Arzamas, and Nizhny Novgorod via R158

  • There are two roads: via Lunino (old road) and via Issa (new road, almost unmarked on maps). To reach the new road: go to the "Ulyanovskaya" stop (see above) and take a seasonal (summer only) bus to any Annovka. Otherwise, you can try hitchhiking from a bad position on the highway near the stop. If going by train, take a marshrutka to Grabovo from the railway square, and take the train from there (ticket inspectors check before Bessonovka). The old road usually has more local traffic. You can reach it by transport to the "Golden Cockerel" café; marshrutkas 166-169 go further along the route. You can also access it via a train towards Ruzaevka, getting off either at Grabovo or Lunino.

South towards Saratov via R158

  • The highway to Saratov runs west of the city. You can exit either via the M5 or via the Tambov highway.

Southwest towards Tambov via R208

  • There are two exits to this road. The first is in the "Gorizont" area, reachable by buses 8, 33, 70, 89 to "Paterson"; from there, walk to the intersection of Voronova and Okruzhnaya Streets and follow the sign. Or take trolleybuses 2, 4; buses 14, 14k; marshrutkas 2a, 2(t), 14, 14k. Tambov and Saratov are on the same road: the fork is 12 km from Penza, in Konstantinovka. You can also reach the Saratov highway by taking a train to Kromshino station ("Penza3 – Rtishchevo" train).
