Republic of Mordovia (Russian: Республика Мордовия) is a republic within the Russian Federation.

  • It is located in the center of the European part of Russia.
  • The administrative center is the city of Saransk.
  • It borders Nizhny Novgorod Oblast to the north, Chuvashia to the northeast, Ulyanovsk Oblast to the east, Penza Oblast to the south, and Ryazan Oblast to the west.
  • Mordovia is the closest Russian republic to Moscow: the distance by road from the MKAD to the western border of Mordovia is 398 km, and straight-line is 330 km. However, administratively Mordovia is part of the Volga Federal District, not the Central one.
  • Federal subject code — 13. Traffic police codes — 13, 113.

Hitchhiking out

  • Most hitchhikers in Russia have at least once visited the most popular settlement in Mordovia - the village of Umyot. Since the late 1990s, this village has become a kilometer-long sequence of private cafes serving homemade food for passing drivers and hitchhikers. See a report by Georgiy Krasnikov.
  • Otherwise, the roads of Mordovia are not much different from other roads in the European part of Russia.
  • Note: There are territories with restricted access for foreign citizens (you must obtain a permit from authorities in advance!): the area limited to the north by the republic’s border and the Moksha River, by the line Stary Gorod - Russkoye Karaevo - Zhegalovo - Bereshchino (Nizhny Novgorod Oblast), except for the named settlements and the automobile road.
