Hi guys, sorry I didn t know where I can ask my question... So I m french and I use quite a lot this website... I have a lot of free time for these two next months and I will be very happy to translate some pages from english to french (even if i use a turkish computer for the moment i will manage for accents and these kind of stuff..)! you can contact me via my e mail adress [email protected] cheers, Chloe

If you are not a native speaker of a language, it might be worthwhile to access hitchwiki.org using Firefox and download the dictionary from Mozilla for the language in which you are writing your contribution, so that you can spell-check what you're typing. As for using UK or US spelling, I'd suggest to use US spelling, but feel free to voice your objections.

-1 articles?

On the front page of the French and the German Hitchwiki it now says that there are -1 articles. Is this just temporary? guakasite, wikitalk 20:35, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

I hope so ;) I have no idea what the reason for this is, but I'll surely fix it. --MrTweek 20:42, 10 September 2007 (CEST)
It's fixed now, at least in the German version. I think you need at least 1 or 2 articles (excluding main page, templates, user pages, etc) to get this working properly. --MrTweek 21:29, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

It would be great if the same images were usable on all Hitchwikis. Maybe something for the future? It might even be somehow possible to get in touch with Wikimedia Commons, and use that one as our image repository? guakasite, wikitalk 20:35, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use completely shared repositories. But you can define one external repository for each wiki. So we could the English one as a global repository, because it has the most images. Would be cool if you could ask the guys from wikimedia commons. Or maybe their repository is already open for third-party wikis? --MrTweek 20:42, 10 September 2007 (CEST)
Alright, I configured that. You can now use images from the local wiki, but also from the wiki. If an image exists in both wikis, the local version will be displayed. --MrTweek 22:47, 10 September 2007 (CEST)

I think it might be a good Idea to send a newsletter to the yahoo-group. Many users probably forgot about hitchwiki but might be more interested to work on a wiki in their language.

I'll start a draft here, feel free to add something.

Dear fellow hitchhiker,

Most of you probably already know www.hitchwiki.org.
Now we happily want to announce that we are going international. SAn from Argentina started a Spanish wiki that you can find at http://www.autostopwiki.com.ar/.
Abgefahren e.V., the German hitchhiking club started a German one at http://de.hitchwiki.org/.
Because we had some French users lately, we also decided to set up http://fr.hitchwiki.org.
If you are familiar with one of those languages, we want to invite you to help building these wikis, no matter if you add new content, or just translate from the English pages.

Also, if you are interested in having Hitchwiki in any other language, and have some time to work on that, just let us know, we are happy to start wikis in more languages if there is enough interest.

And, if your are interested in the future of Hitchwiki, check http://hitchwiki.org/Hitchwiki:Organization and leave your comments, if you have some.

happy hitching,

The Hitchwiki Team:

I moved your stuff to Hitchwiki:Community_Portal, because this is the place where it belongs. --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 19:13, 26 September 2007 (CEST)

Russian hitchwiki

Would you think it would be possible to set up a Russian branch of hitchwiki on ru.hitchwiki.org? Hitching is extremely popular in Russia and other former USSR countries, and I am fairly sure we will be able to find contributors! Lnx, 3 March 2008 11:40 GMT

Just ask User:MrTweek, he's the Admin of the website. Would be also great if all those Russian contributors then translate their knowledge to the English hitchwiki :) We're still missing a lot of information on Russia :) But thanks for sure for your contributions so far. platschisite, wikitalk 12:44, 3 March 2008 (CET)
I would love to start a Russian hitchwiki. The only problem is, that I don't know anyone who speaks Russian. It is important to keep an eye on a wiki to avoid spam or other unwanted content. So, if you are willing to be the administrator for the wiki (or know someone who would do it), just let me know, and I'll set it up at once ;) It's really not much work, you just need to check the content maybe once a week. --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 13:08, 3 March 2008 (CET)
I am a native Russian speaker - while I would not be able to add a lot of stuff on Russia & former USSR (I have only hitch-hiked in the UK), I would be able to watch the wiki for unwanted material --Lnx 16:16, 3 March 2008 (GMT)
Great :D I will set it up soon and contact you --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 17:58, 3 March 2008 (CET)
Thanks a lot for setting the Russian section up - the only thing is can you please check all the style files (.css) are uploaded correctly? Some styles don't seem to be applied (e.g. edit section links are not in the right place and the font is of the wrong size too) --Lnx 00:40, 4 March 2008 (GMT)
I copied the css from the english site. I think it looks correct now? --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 10:03, 4 March 2008 (CET)
Yes, thanks a lot! I wrote to autostop.lt and asked them to add a link to us on their site. I'll be quite busy until the end of the week, but will still be watching the site (although I won't be able to make any significant contributions until about Friday) --Lnx 11:52, 4 March 2008 (GMT)
Good job. I asked some people in September about this, they wanted to talk about it. Never got an answer back, though. It looks now like they started a wiki back then, but it was not a success... strange. --Alex 16:43, 5 March 2008 (CET)

Hey, I thouhgt a lot about russian part of hitchwiki. I think we need main_page like in Finnish hitchwiki. But I don't know how to create it. :( Russian part should be devoted mostly to Russia and other russian speaking regions of ex_СНГ. Other russians travelled in other countries know at least elementary English, so they will be able update English part. Also I'm ready to create russian templates but don't know how to. :( I looked at the list of maintainers of Russian part of hitchwiki. Hey guys are you really able to speak Russian? :) Should I join you in this activities.

Sure, we could really need some help from real Russians ;) I just gave you admin rights on the Russian wiki. Feel free to change whatever you want. What kind of templates do you want to create? How do you exactly want the Main Page? Just ask here for whatever you need! There are a lot of people here around who want to help but don't speak Russian (like me). Also, maybe contact platschi. He is admin as well and speaks at least some Russian. --MrTweek 14:20, 4 November 2010 (CET)
  • Thanks a lot. Templates for news and events for main page. Then templates for cities, countries and personalities.
  • I think Russian version of hitchwiki should focus on russian speaking regions - Russia and ex_USSR countries. Then someone will translate it to english. I've found such design on finnish main_page http://hitchwiki.org/fi/Etusivu but all tags and commands are in finnish too. Is there is any translator for wikipages? Is there is any WUSIWUG editor for wikipages where I can just drag and drop elements? Siberian explorer 16:21, 4 November 2010 (CET):
Yes, it should definitely focus on Russian-speaking countries. Just put them on the Main Page, it's very easy.
About the templates: Just copy the code of English templates that look nice and change the content. I.e. this: Template:Cities_Germany should be easy to transform to Russian. Same for Template:News and Template:Events.
There is no WYSIWYG editor yet, I'll see if I can install one.
But I'd also propose, you just play around and try it out. It's much easier than it looks like and you'll learn it while doing. Really it's no magic ;) If it doesn't look good, there are always some people watching and helping. --MrTweek 16:31, 4 November 2010 (CET)
Hey, I started some stuff on Russian hitchwiki. Can do the templates as well, but probably only in about two weeks, as I'm now hitching to Moscow :) Lets start it! --platschi

Portuguese hitchwiki

I'm a Brazilian Hitchhiker, and native Portuguese speaker. I think there is very little material about hitchhiking in my language. I can translate articles get my language, and I know that some hitchhikers are now on the roads of Brazil and South America, which could also help. Even with specific information about Brazil and South America. What you think of opening a pt.hitchwiki.org?

Yes, we could do that. However, it's important to have someone to look after it regularly, at least to avoid spam, but also to avoid spamming. So, if you want to be the admin for it, I will start one. --MrTweek 15:13, 30 July 2008 (CEST)

Its OK for me. I will go a time in the road (hitch here is hard), but i have a bit time for my blog and for here. What we need do?

hr. => sh.

The Serbo-Croation Wikipedia uses sh. hr is for Croation. It's probably better to use sh for the Serbo-Croation Hitchwiki. guaka 20:33, 15 November 2010 (CET)

Yes, I discussed that with Vrana. The thing is, that serbo-croatian does not exist officially and the code sh is obsolete. So we decided to start a Croatian wiki (it's what she speaks), but call it Serbo-Croatian, to motivate people from Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro as well. Also, Serbo-Croatian can be written in cyrillic, Croatian is always in Latin. Not an easy topic --MrTweek 23:20, 15 November 2010 (CET)
