While I will not erase this previous entry as all are welcome to share their opinion, I must strongly disagree. I'm guessing some very white suburbanite with little people or travel experience wrote that. Five Points is perfectly safe, as is about all of Denver. Five Points is simply more diverse both ethnically and economically. Which actually makes it a great area to visit. There are a lot of cultural venues here as well, including an African American museum within a library, and jazz spots. East Denver is actually very nice and laid back. I would guess the person was referring to east Colfax. On this street you'll find some of the most interesting and down to earth people in Denver. So if you're scared of everything, hate new experiences and people, and are incredibly boring, sure, skip those places. But you're hitchhiking, so why wouldn't you be down for those things? East Colfax is actually my favorite part of Denver and has some AWESOME cafes, people, bars, etc. SO check it out.

Apologies for yet another edit, but the poster above is being idealistic. Denver is a big city, and any big city has high-crime areas. While "diversity" is all well and good, getting robbed at gunpoint is not. Avoid certain areas of northeast Denver.
