Hundreds of hitchhikers take part in European Hitchhiking Festival

On the 7th of August 2009 (7/8/9), hitchhikers from all over the world will team up in Odessa, Ukraine, for the second European Hitchhiking Festival: called "The 789 Project".

The festival demonstrates that even in the century of motorways and low-cost airlines, the hitchhiking community is still very much alive. Each year thousands of people hitchhike all over the world; in many countries it is still a common means of transport. Our goal is to help people realise that sharing their car and swapping stories by picking up a hitchhiker can turn out to be a great experience. The hitchhiking community wants to promote thumbing a ride as a way of traveling.

The festival is in Odessa, but the adventure starts on your doorstep! Each participant is invited to contribute to the event with stories, pictures and videos. Last year (08/08/2008) a documentary movie was even produced about the event.

Journalists are also invited to join the European Hitchhiking Festival. They can team up with experienced hitchhikers and take part in the preparatory meetings taking place all over Europe from the 1st - 6th August. To get the latest news from the road, they can also follow the adventures of a group of hitchhikers and call them to hear their updates and stories from the road.
