Hitchhiking out
West towards Roslavl and Smolensk on R120
Option 1 - After "Hypermarket Liniya-1"
R120 towards Smolensk starts from Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, stops "Elektronika Store" and "Hypermarket Liniya-1". The first possible spot is just after the "Hypermarket Liniya-1" bus stop, behind the "Tsaritsa" cafe.
Option 2 - After the bypass road crossing
The best position is past the intersection of R120 with the bypass road, after the abandoned DPS post and the "Neftika" gas station. From the Bryansk-Orlovsky railway station and the bus station, take route 60 to the final stop "Michurinsky settlement." Walk about 500 m to the bypass, after which you'll find the abandoned DPS post and, a bit further on the right, the "Neftika" gas station. From the Sven Monastery and TV Center, take route 177 via the bus station to the town of Glinishchevo and hitchhike just after the edge of the settlement.
Southwest towards Novozybkov, towards Gomel (Belarus) on R240
R240 towards Gomel continues from Stanke-Dimitrova Avenue. The city exit is at the "TV Center" terminal, Suponevo village.
From M3 (Belye Berega) to the "TV Center" stop - bus 106. From "Myasokombinat" stop to "TV Center" - route 45. From Bryansk-Orlovsky railway station - routes 1, 52, 79, trolleybus 1. Position: after the "TV Center" roundabout, near the "Berezka" store. Further in Suponevo towards the DPS post before the bypass, currently under repair, no positions available. From the bus station (boarding across the road) and from "TV Center," take minibus 166 to Dobrun settlement on R240 beyond the bypass.
North towards Kaluga and Moscow on M3
To reach M3 from Bryansk, take R120 (A141) Bryansk-Orel, which continues from Moskovsky Avenue.
Option 1 - City Exit
From the bus station take minibuses 40, 45, or bus 106 from Bryansk-Orlovsky station, routes 3, 31, all to "Myasokombinat" stop (usually final). Walk a bit further past the ring road intersection. The position is just after the roundabout. Best to catch a car at least to the intersection with M3.
Option 2 - To M3/R120 Intersection
Take a suburban bus to the M3/R120 intersection (cost is higher than city fare). From the city entrance from Gomel to Belye Berega on M3 (towards Moscow), take bus 106, or bus 72 from the central market. Minibuses also available. Get off at the stop by the cafe and car service, then walk to the transport post.
- Recommendation: At M3/R120 intersection and nearby post, there's forest for wild camping and several cafes to eat. For onward travel, do not go past the Belye Berega turn—cars go too fast for stopping.
East towards Orel on R120
R120 (A141) leaves via Moskovsky Avenue and continues to Orel.
Option 1 - City Exit
Same as above: reach "Myasokombinat" stop, walk past the ring road. Position is just past the roundabout. Best to catch a car at least to the M3 intersection. For Orel, hitchhike after the Moscow-Kiev and Bryansk-Orel intersection.
Option 2 - To M3/R120 Intersection
Same as for Moscow direction: get to Belye Berega via bus 106 or 72 (from central market). Minibuses available.
- At the M3/R120 intersection, it's forested—good for camping and cafes nearby.
South toward Ukraine on M3
To reach M3 for Ukraine, follow the same instructions as above.
- For onward travel, from the M3/R120 intersection, the first car is best taken to Navlya. There are two turns to Navlya; look for the abandoned police post at the second turn (with a bridge). If dropped at the first (only a gas station), it's about a kilometer walk to the better position.
- Next key spot: turn to Sevsk—cafes, well-functioning gas stations, often police cars. After Sevsk, catch a car only as far as the "Ukraine—right, Zheleznogorsk—left" junction, a good hitchhiking spot with a gas station, toilet, and good cafe. Lots of forest, suitable for wild camping.
Hitchhiking in
Many long-distance trains stop in Bryansk, running Moscow–Belarus and Moscow–Ukraine. There are express trains Moscow-Bryansk and suburban trains in six directions: Zhukovka/Roslavl, Suzemyka/Komarichi, Dyatkovo, Sukhinihi, Unecha, Orel. Timetables change frequently, so check the schedule for your day on Yandex. Buses Moscow-Bryansk run frequently; they depart from Kievsky Rail Terminal in Moscow (not from bus stations), and in Bryansk from Bryansk-1-Orlovsky railway station. Bryansk-1-Orlovsky is the main station, all long-distance trains and buses depart there; Bryansk-2-Lgovsky serves suburban directions.
The "Ukraina" M3 motorway passes west of Bryansk, and the R120 (Smolensk-Orel) bypasses the city from the south.
Places to avoid
Accommodation and Sleep
Wild camping is possible in the "Solovyi" forest-park zone between the Sovietsky, Volodarsky, and Bezhitsky districts, almost in the city center—best tentspots are the left bank of Desna river. However, near Bryansk Orlovsky station and the DOSAAF pool, this area borders a high-security penal colony, so pitch away from it. Most of the Desna and Bolva floodplains in town are forest park zones where tent camping is possible.
