Hitchhiking out
Northwest towards Vitebsk and Polotsk (Belarus) via R120
- Take city bus 101 or 30 to the "Yuridicheskiy institut" stop on Vitebskoe highway. Walk west past the road junction and the police post.
- You can also take intercity buses to Arkhipovo or Pochachevo villages, which are already past the ring road.
South towards Roslavl and Bryansk via R120
- Bus 127 from the main bus station to Koshchino.
Southwest towards Orsha and Minsk (Belarus) via M1
- By commuter train Smolensk-Krasnoe (one in the morning, two in the evening):
- Gushino station: walk 1.3 km north on Vokzalnaya street.
- 471 km stop: walk 700 meters to gas station.
- 478 km stop: walk 1.3 km to gas station.
- 481 km stop: walk 1.3 km to gas station.
- Krasnoe station: walk 800 meters to a large police post (exit from Russia).
- By buses on the ring road:
- Bus 116 "Avtovokzal - Olsha". 150 meters to the highway.
- Bus 137 "Avtovokal - Zhukovo" or 148 "pl. Zhelyabovo - Pechersk". Get off at the last stop "pos. Pechersk", then walk 1 km north to the police post.
East towards Vyazma and Moscow via M1
- Take suburban train towards Moscow to Yartsevo station. The highway is 700 m north through Yartsevo.
- Alternatively, buses to Pechersk as mentioned above, to the police post.
North towards Nevel and Pskov via 66K-11
- Bus 116 "Avtovokzal - Olsha". Then walk 1 km west on M1 to the turnoff.
East towards Dorogobuzh via R134
- Take suburban train towards Moscow to Kardymovo station. The road is at the north end of the platform.
- Bus 109 from main bus station to Kadymovo. Get off and you can start hitchhiking just after the ring road junction.
Hitchhiking in
- The M1 motorway Moscow-Brest passes along the northern outskirts of the city, so it's possible to transit past Smolensk without entering.
