Myshkin has never hitchhiked anywhere before (any more than one mile before having the van stopped by the police on the way to Czech Tek) but plans to make a hitchhiking trip in September around Eastern Europe and the Balkans for 3 to 4 weeks. He is from the UK and has been living in Prague, Czech Republic for the last 18 months.

He has found this site incredibly useful so far, and looks forward to making some (hopefully) valuable input on these pages soon.

Queries

Has anybody hitched/camped in Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro or Croatia away from the cities? I've read about some areas being unsafe because of landmines still being around. Does anyone know how common/dangerous they are, considering I could be doing a lot of 'free' camping in these areas?

I don't fancy having a landmine as an alarm clock.

Hey, I was hitching in Serbia and Croatia. If you stay on the highways while going out of the cities, there will be absolutely no problem about land mines. There are specific areas where a lot of land-mines are located, but if you stay on the roads, absolutely no problem. Try to avoid the Kosovo area, seems to be quite bad to hitchhike there currently. In Serbia I would not recommend to hitchhike after dawn, don't know how it is in the other two countries. I would not recommend wild camping out there if you're not 110% sure that the fields are clean. As I said, just stay on the roads! platschi 01:09, 17 August 2007 (CEST)
hey, i didn't do any camping out there. I hitched from Maribor directly to Belgrade in one day, staying there at some people's home (HC) and then hitched directly towards Sofia some days later (also within one day). That's not the problem I guess. The most mines, as far as I know, you'll find in the border region around Osijek and in the south of Croatia near Dubrovnik. Just google a bit for information about it. Also, begin this week a couple from Maribor hitchhiked directly to Istanbul with a Turkish truck driver. Maybe an idea ;) ? There are many of them on the highways. If you need more information, contact me at MSN ( platschi (at) gmail . com ) platschi 12:48, 17 August 2007 (CEST)

Hey, in June 2006 I hitched from Budapest to Belgrade then through Bosnia, up the Croatian coast and then into Slovenia. No dramas. I slept on the side of the road...2 nights in bosnia and I didn't even think of landmines, probably should have. but i'm still alive :P
