Torzhok (Russian: Торжок) is a city in Russia, located in the center of Tver Oblast.

  • In the past, the city was on the great hitchhiking route between St. Petersburg and Moscow, and several generations of hitchhikers used to hang out on the industrial eastern outskirts of the city.
  • Now, the main traffic goes along the M11 highway and there is little reason to enter Torzhok if you are traveling between the two capitals.
  • Nowadays, hitchhikers visit Torzhok mainly to walk around the historic center, visit monasteries and museums.

Hitchhiking out

North towards Vyshny Volochyok, Veliky Novgorod via M10

  • Leningradskoye Highway from Torzhok intersects the M10 near the settlement of Slavniy. Bus #319 goes to the village of Mitino. Ask the driver to drop you off at the turn to the M10.

Southeast towards Tver and Moscow via M10

  • There is a police post (DPS) at the intersection of Kalininskoye Highway and M10. You can take buses to Tver from here.

West towards Kuvshinovo and Ostashkov via A111

  • From Pushkin Square, take a minibus up Grazhdanskaya Street. You can ride a few stops and get off when the urban development ends, near the "5 Stars" restaurant. From there, it's about 1 km to the city exit. On the right-hand side there are rows of trees, and locals often hitchhike here. At the end of Kozhevnikov Street, there will be a couple of gas stations. No reason to walk further.

South towards Staritsa via R88

  • Take a minibus to the Yuzhny neighborhood and walk past the woodworking plant. Opposite the plant is a correctional facility.

North towards Saint Petersburg via M11

  • The high-speed toll highway M11 goes to St. Petersburg, bypassing Vyshny Volochyok, which is considered the biggest "trap" for hitchhikers on the M10. Therefore, if you're in a hurry, it makes sense to leave a car going to Volochyok at the new interchange (look for the M11 sign!) and walk to the toll booth. Be prepared with a sign, as cars exit the toll station in both directions (to Moscow and St. Petersburg), and hitchhiking is neither possible nor allowed directly on the M11.
