There The Clifton Suspension Bridge out of town is one lane, and drivers have to pay a toll to get on. While you're not allowed to wait at the barrier where the thing goes up and down to let the cars in, the time it took for the guy to get out of his booth and walk over to me to tell me this was all the time I needed to get a ride to Exeter (it looked like it wouldn't be too hard to wait either before or after the bridge, either). From the city centre, you can get a local bus (#8 and #9 both work) for £1.70 that'll take you to within about 200m of the bridge. Supposedly, there's a service station at near Easton-in-Gordano, too. I will update this when i have found out how to get there from Bristol and tested it as a strategy! The good news is, hitching (in my experience) gets easier as you head South and West! Southbound from Gordano services can be very slow - two hours and more, especially in sjmmersummer. There's an expensive bus to Portishead-Bristol every 30 mins in the daytime. Walking to Clifton is 7 kilometers.
