Slyudyanka (Russian: Слюдянка) is a city in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, and the administrative center of Slyudyansky District. It is located at the western end of Lake Baikal, 110 km from Irkutsk. The Trans-Siberian Railway and the R258 “Baikal” motorway pass through the city, between the slopes of the Khamar-Daban Range.

Hitchhiking out

East towards Baikalsk and Ulan-Ude on the R258 "Baikal"

  • As you leave, the road rises over a small pass; in the middle of the ascent, there is a widened shoulder on the right where you can hitchhike. There are streetlights.
  • Bus No. 103 to Baikalsk runs five times a day.

North towards Kultuk and Irkutsk on the R258 "Baikal"

  • There is a traffic police post (GIBDD) one kilometer outside the city. There is a petrol station with lighting at the exit.
  • At the end of Lenina Street there is a railway crossing over the Trans-Siberian. Immediately after it, there is a Rosneft petrol station with lighting.
  • If you need to go to Mondy, bus No. 109 goes twice a day to the village of Tibelyti, saving you from walking and hitchhiking in Kultuk.

South towards Chersky Peak

  • From "PSO Yuzhny" begins a broken dirt road, which off-road vehicles use to take tourists up to the "Oladushki" café. From there, a similar dirt track continues for 5 km up the valley, after which only a hiking trail remains.

Places to avoid

Accommodation and Sleep

  • Couchsurfing, HospitalityClub, trustroots, BeWelcome, etc.
  • You can find a host through CouchBot—send the name of the city in a message to CouchBot on VKontakte or through the CouchBot in Telegram. How and when to send a request to increase your chances? See the instructions (in Russian).
  • For sleeping in your own tent, Shaman Cape is recommended. However, in summer local youths often gather here to drink, and all the firewood has long been burned. Other shores of Lake Baikal are not suitable for overnight stays, as the noise from the Trans-Siberian makes it impossible to sleep, even with earplugs.
