second picture looks like fake. roads near Khorug are paved and in not bad condition, because there was no war. that picture could be made near Kalai-Khumb years ago.

The picture is from wikipedia, see here. It claims to be from 2007, but really looks much older to me. Maybe you could ask the original author? --MrTweek 09:59, 26 October 2010 (CEST)
Bus on the picture is a kind a dinosaurus. :) U can see such Pamir Highway only few kilometers now, the rest distance is reconstructed or in better condition.
This makes me wish to hitch there next year. is it possible for (western) europeans to get visa for those countries on spot at borders? guess not, uhm? or in moskva? or everything to be obtained in the home country? --Platschi 21:39, 26 October 2010 (CEST)
Only the end is in Afghanistan. The intersting part is in Tajikistan and maybe Kyrgysztan. --MrTweek 09:32, 27 October 2010 (CEST)
Platschi, you need visa for tajikistan and special permits for Gorno-Badakhshan - these you can get in Duschanbe, but as somebody told me who traveled there with a caravan, it can last some days to get the special permit in duschanbe, but seems to be possible....Mr Tweek is wrong, the interesting part is Uzbekistan - Tajikistan and partly northern Afghanistan. A Border crossing in Ikestam to Afghanistan seems to be open. From there you can get to the Wakhan Corridor, which must be one of the most interesting and remotest areas in the world - so remote that even taliban seems not to go there. if you go, please take a local guide. I have this link for you: Pamirs Roof of the world I will also add the link on the page. It's mean if you travel my dream without me :(, i want to travel there since years. ... ah and if you go into afghanistan, plaese make sure that you have a re-entry visa for tajikistan and for the special regions --Quarim 10:24, 27 October 2010 (CEST)
recently I gave to mr.tweek link to one german guy I travelled with in Tajikistan in this autumn. Goetz said he had made all visas in Brussels - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Permits to Badakhshan you cant get with visa after writing special petition, they will put special stamp in your passport. also permit costs 15 somoni~4USD in Dushanbe
I guess everywhere in those countries it's interesting & beautiful :) thanks for the info quarim. how u think its best hitchhiking in from the outside? via russia or georgia to kasachstan & kyrgysztan? lots of visa then to be obtained in advance, which means u have to plan :( i'll put it on my list. and quarim, just follow your dreams! you'll be disappointed if u don't do so in some years. --Platschi 17:29, 27 October 2010 (CEST)
