Slovenia is a country in Central Europe according to wikipedia, alternatively part of Southern Europe. It is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Hitchhiking used to be more common here in the past, but today people aren´t used to hitchikers it is still very doable and they could be suprised safe. Drivers are happy to see a hitchhiker and will tell youstories about hitchhiking when they were young. But still, hitchiking is quite possible and safe. You will find that people People in Slovenia usually speak English quite good, (at least the basics) but German language and Italian(on the cost) can also come in handy.
Hitchiking with close to highways will take you far and fast, but if you have enough time, use it to hitchhike on the small roads. Slovenia can offer you a lot to see on its small areaterritory. Geographic landscapes change fast and you can get from the edge foot of the highest mountain (Triglav, 2864m) Alps to the Adriatic sea in a cca. 2 hour drive)about 3h ride, or to Pannonian basin in 5h.
From the capital, Ljubljana, it is possible to easily hitchhike to the north/east (Maribor, Austria), north/west (Jesenice ,Austria), to the south (Croatia, Zagreb) and to the west (Postojna, Italy). It is the best to use highways entrances, and to hold a sign marking your destination. Hitchhiking in the rural areas is even easier, and a ride can be found even in the smallest roads. Highways are always in a good condition, there are also service areas on the motorway.
At motorway From the capital city Ljubljana, it is easy to hitchhike to the north-east (Maribor, Celje, Vienna, Graz (Austria), Hungary), north-west (Jesenice, Bled, Villach, Salzburg (Austria), Germany), south-east (Zagreb (Croatia)) and south-west (Postojna, Koper, Italy). Your best choice would be to use highway entrances, and to hold a sign marking your destination. For more info, check out the page Hitchwiki Ljubljana.Hitchhiking in the rural areas is even easier, and it is possible to get a pick even on the smallest roads. Highways are always in a good condition, there are also service areason the motorway. The highway rest stops, standing with a sign seems to work better than asking people, especially if you don't speak Slovenian. ====Important roads in Slovenia====57 - Ljubljana to eastern Austria 61 - Italy and western croatia to western Austria passing Ljubljana 59 - Eastern Croatia to eastern Austria 51 - costline 2 - Ljubljana to eastern Croatia 5 - Maribor to Hungary

Border Crossings
Sometimes drivers Since Slovenia is a part of Schengen, borders with Austria, Hungary and Italy are not that friendly and they don't wish to take a problem. Usually you abroadjust pass them without stopping, but sometimes they even leave you just before the police would stop the vehicles and ask for documents (ID is enough for EU citizens). It is more strict on the Croatian border crossing, because Cro is not a part of Schengen yet. You'll usually get stuck in the line of cars, waiting time depends on the traffic. But Let's hope, it changes soon:) When leaving the country, don't forget that Croatia and Hungary don't worry! If you are going to Italy use Euro(Trieste, Venice)as their currencies, your best option is but Croatian Kuna and Hungarian Forint. You can exchange euros in banks or post offices.   If you want to hitchhike till pass the border city (Sezana) and from there take , but get a bus (€1.90) till the Italian village of Villa Opicina. From there pick to towns or villages close, you can take plenty of buses to Trst (Trieste) and continue trains or busses to Venice. From begining of December 2011pass it. there It is no train from Sežana to Villa Opicina or any other connection from Slovenia to Italynot very expensive.[http https://www.rtvsloslo-zeleznice.si/tureavantureen/prevoznapassenger-sredstvatransport/ukinjentravelling-vlak-ki-je-vozil-med-ljubljano-in-benetkamiabroad The link above takes you to the Slovenian Railways page, where you can see all about the train connections with neighbour countries (usually from Ljubljana), as well as local lines. It is also the last way out, if you get stuck somewhere. (stay strong<3) Of course, you can always use Flixbus or any other bus line too.  Border towns/ villages that might help: AUSTRIA (Jesenice, Kranjska gora, Dravograd, Slovenj Gradec, Maribor), CROATIA (Brežice, Krško, Dobova, Piran, Črnomelj, Ptuj), HUNGARY (Murska Sobota, Lendava, Hodoš) and ITALY (Nova Gorica, Sežana, Koper, Bovec, Vipava) Crossing from Slovenia to Austria : Border crossing is a very luxurious hitching spot, as the traffic slows down to about 10km/272637 Reference]h (because of the pay toll for Karavanke tunnel, when the road is busy) so the whole highway sees you clearly. Border There is also plenty of space for drivers to pick you up. == Useful information ==As everywhere in Europe, it it not allowed and very dangerous to cross the highway in Slovenia. Also be careful about crossing the red lights in Slovenian cities, you'll get a problem anymore20-40€ fine, if you get caught. Wildcamping in Slovenia is officially prohibited, but by my personal experience, because there that is schengen rule not a big problem. As long as you don't make fires and no border crossings any morefollow basic ruls, people won't mind you. If you want to hitchike to Trieste or further to Italy, walk camp close the buildings on main road left from train station towards BTC signthe private property, and ask the locals. And don't try to catch put a ride tent up on the tall grass, since the farmers hate it to Trieste or Villa Opicinathe bottom of their hearts. As long as nobody calls the police you're good. Couchsurfing, especially in Ljubljana, works fine as well. This is  Tips are not best hitchhiking spotmandatory or expected in restaurants, but I didnt found betterit is always nice to tip, if you're happy with the service. Slovenians often tip in bars. There are 2 main words for "hi" in Slovenian.--Cro gavran 22:11Živjo (Ž is pronouced /ˈʒeː/) is used in Ljubljana and surrondings, 21 April 2012 (CESTand Zdravo is dominant around Maribor. You can make a good impression making a difference between the two;== Nomadwiki & Trashwiki ==
If you are going to Zagrebnomad:Slovenia trash:Slovenia, and you were not lucky enough to get a direct ride, try to get to a city called Brezice. From there take either a bus or a local train to the border village called Dobova, from which there is every two hours a cheap local train to Zagreb (€1.50).
Crossing from Austria to Slovenia :
If you don't get a ride to Ljubljana, there is a point some 60km before ljubljana where trucks are weighed and presumably the old border check point was in place. Get out here and you can hitch all the cars and possibly even get a ride to Croatia / Serbia as you'll be catching all the traffic coming from Austria. Jass received a ride in September 2012 after 5 minutes of waiting to eastern Croatia (but should have exited in Zagreb as there is little traffic on any rest station in Croatia).
