It is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Hitchhiking used to be more common here in the past, but today people seem aren´t used to hitchikers and they could be more afraid of hitchhikerssuprised to see you. But still, it hitchiking is quite popular. From the capital, Ljubljana, it is possible to easily hitchhike to the north (Maribor, Austria), to the east (Croatia, Zagreb) and to the South (Postojna, Italy)safe. It is the best to use highways entrances, and to hold a sign marking your destination. Hitchhiking You will find that people in the rural areas is even easierSlovenia speak English quite good, and a ride German language can be found even also come in the smallest roadshandy.

Border Crossings
Sometimes drivers are not that friendly and they don't wish to take you abroad, sometimes they even leave you just before the border crossing. But don't worry! If you are going to Italy (Trieste, Venice), your best option is to hitchhike till the border city (Sezana) and from there take a bus (€1.90) or a train (Don't buy a ticket, just hop in, it's 10 min.) till the Italian village of Villa Opicina. From there you can take plenty of buses to Trst (Trieste) and continue to Venice. From begining of December 2011. there is no train from Sežana to Villa Opicina or any other connection from Slovenia to Italy.Reference. Border is also not a problem anymore, because there is schengen rule and no border crossings any more. If you want to hitchike to Trieste or further to Italy, walk on main road left from train station towards BTC sign, and try to catch a ride to Trieste or Villa Opicina. This is not best hitchhiking spot, but I didnt found better.--Cro gavran 22:11, 21 April 2012 (CEST)
If you are going to Zagreb, and you were not lucky enough to get a direct ride, try to get to a city called Brezice. From there take either a bus or a local train to the border village called Dobova, from which there is every two hours a cheap local train to Zagreb (€1.50).
Crossing from Austria to Slovenia :
If you don't get a ride to Ljubljana, there is a point some 60km before ljubljana where trucks are weighed and presumably the old border check point was in place. Get out here and you can hitch all the cars and possibly even get a ride to Croatia / Serbia as you'll be catching all the traffic coming from Austria. Jass received a ride in September 2012 after 5 minutes of waiting to eastern Croatia (but should have exited in Zagreb as there is little traffic on any rest station in Croatia).

Crossing from Slovenia to Austria :
Border crossing is very luxurious hitching spot, as the traffic slows down to about 10km/h (in the afternoon at least) so the whole highway sees you clearly. There is also plenty of space for drivers to pick you up.
