It is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Hitchhiking used to be more common here in the past, but today people aren´t used to hitchikers it is still very doable and they could be suprised safe. Drivers are happy to see a hitchhiker and will tell youstories about hitchhiking when they were young. But still, hitchiking is quite possible and safe. You will find that people People in Slovenia usually speak English quite good, (at least the basics) but German language and Italian (on the cost) can also come in handy.
Hitchiking with close to highways will take you far and fast, but if you have enough time, use it to hitchhike on the small roads. Slovenia can offer you a lot to see on its small areaterritory. Geographic landscapes change fast and you can get from the edge foot of the tallest mountain (Triglav, 2864m) Alps to the Adriatic sea or the Pannonian basin in a cca. 2 hour drive)about 3h ride.
From the capital, Ljubljana, it is possible to easily hitchhike to the north/east (Maribor, Austria), north/west (Jesenice ,Austria), to the south (Croatia, Zagreb) and to the west (Postojna, Italy). It is the best to use highways entrances, and to hold a sign marking your destination. Hitchhiking in the rural areas is even easier, and a ride can be found even in the smallest roads. Highways are always in a good condition, there are also service areas on the motorway.

Border Crossings
Sometimes drivers Since Slovenia is a part of Schengen, borders with Austria, Hungary and Italy are not a problem. Usually you just pass them without stopping, but sometimes the police would stop the vehicles and ask for documents (ID is enough for EU citizens). It is a little bit more strict on the Croatian border, because the country is not a part of Schengen yet. You'll usually get stuck in the line of cars, waiting time depends on the traffic. When leaving the country, don't forget that friendly Croatia and they Hungary don't wish use Euro(€) as their currencies, but Croatian Kuna and Hungarian Forint. You can exchange Euros in banks or post offices.  If you want to pass the border, but get a pick to towns or villages close by, you can take trains or busses to pass it. It is not very expensive, especially at the weekend. https://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/passenger-transport/travelling-abroad The link above takes you to the Slovenian Railways page. There you abroadcan find all about the train connections with neighbour countries (usually departing from Ljubljana and skipping small stations), as well as local lines, sometimes they even leave many of which can take you just before over the border crossingas well. It is also the last way out, if you get stuck somewhere. (stay strong<3) Of course, you can always use Flixbus or any other bus line too. But don  Border towns/ villages that might help:t worry! If you are going to Italy AUSTRIA (Jesenice, Kranjska gora, Dravograd, Slovenj Gradec, Maribor), CROATIA (TriesteBrežice, Krško, Dobova, Piran, Črnomelj, VenicePtuj), your best option is to hitchhike till the border city HUNGARY (SezanaMurska Sobota, Lendava, Hodoš) and ITALY (Nova Gorica, Sežana, Koper, Bovec, Vipava) Crossing from there take Slovenia to Austria : Border crossing is a bus very luxurious hitching spot, as the traffic slows down to about 10km/h (€1.90because of the pay toll for Karavanke tunnel, when the road is busy) till so the Italian village of Villa Opicinawhole highway sees you clearly. From there you can take There is also plenty of buses space for drivers to Trst (Trieste) pick you up. == Useful information ==As everywhere in Europe, it it not allowed and continue very dangerous to Venicecross the highway in Slovenia. From begining of December 2011Also be careful about crossing the red lights in Slovenian cities, you'll get a 20-40€ fine, if you get caught. there  Wildcamping in Slovenia is no train officially not allowed, but the law is usually not enforced. As long as you don't make fires and follow basic camping rules, people won't mind you. You can also go from Sežana house to house and ask for a place to Villa Opicina set up the tent in the garden. Couchsurfing, especially in Ljubljana, works fine as well. Tips are not mandatory or any other connection from Slovenia expected in restaurants, but it is always nice to Italytip, if you're happy with the service.often tip in bars.rtvslo There are 2 main words for "hi" in Slovenian.siŽivjo (Ž is pronouced /tureavantureˈʒeː/prevozna-sredstva/ukinjen-vlak-ki-je-vozil-med-ljubljano-) is used in-benetkami/272637 Reference. Border is also not a problem anymoreLjubljana and surrondings, because there and Zdravo is schengen rule and no border crossings any moredominant around Maribor. If you want You can make a good impression by knowing the difference between the two;) == Personal Experiences == Hitchhiked east to hitchike west in winter 2023. Waiting times where usually less than 15 minutes and everyone was happy to see a hitchiker. Wildcamped without problems - Ian or further  Hitchhiked east to Italywest in summer 2023, walk on main road left everything and everybody was great except when crossing from train Hungary. The area near Pince was quite unpopulated (stuck for about twelve hours at Lendava petrol station towards BTC sign, thumbing at sunset and sunrise in the same spot after a nap in the local graveyard) and try instead ended up stringing together a few local rides of a few minutes to get to catch a ride Murska Subota, then got to Trieste or Villa OpicinaLjubljana in two rides. This On one ride, a Hungarian told me that "hitchhiking is not best hitchhiking spot, but I didnt found betterpart of Slovenian culture" and that they aren't of hitchhikers as much as other countries. --Cro gavranVinteuil 22:11, 21 April 2012 (CEST) == Nomadwiki & Trashwiki == nomadwiki
If you are going to Zagreb, and you were not lucky enough to get a direct ride, try to get to a city called Brezice. From there take either a bus or a local train to the border village called Dobova, from which there is every two hours a cheap local train to Zagreb (€1.50).
Crossing from Austria to Slovenia :
If you don't get a ride to Ljubljana, there is a point some 60km before ljubljana where trucks are weighed and presumably the old border check point was in place. Get out here and you can hitch all the cars and possibly even get a ride to Croatia / Serbia as you'll be catching all the traffic coming from Austria. Jass received a ride in September 2012 after 5 minutes of waiting to eastern Croatia (but should have exited in Zagreb as there is little traffic on any rest station in Croatia).
