It is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Hitchhiking used to be more common here in the past, but today people seem to be more afraid of hitchhikers. But still, it is quite popular. From the capital, Ljubljana, it is possible to easily hitchhike to the north (Maribor, Austria), to the east (Croatia, Zagreb) still very doable and to the South (Postojna, Italy)safe. It is the best Drivers are happy to use highways entrances, see a hitchhiker and to hold a sign marking your destinationwill tell you stories about hitchhiking when they were young. Major roads (motorwayscost) are always can also come in a good condition, there are also service areas on the motorwayhandy.

Border Crossings
Sometimes drivers Since Slovenia is a part of Schengen, borders with Austria, Hungary and Italy are not a problem. Usually you just pass them without stopping, but sometimes the police would stop the vehicles and ask for documents (ID is enough for EU citizens). It is more strict on the Croatian border, because Cro is not a part of Schengen yet. You'll usually get stuck in the line of cars, waiting time depends on the traffic. Let's hope, it changes soon:) When leaving the country, don't forget that friendly Croatia and they Hungary don't wish use Euro(€) as their currencies, but Croatian Kuna and Hungarian Forint. You can exchange euros in banks or post offices.   If you want to pass the border, but get a pick to towns or villages close by, you can take trains or busses to pass it. It is not very expensive. https://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/passenger-transport/travelling-abroad The link above takes you to the Slovenian Railways page. There you abroadcan find all about the train connections with neighbour countries (usually departing from Ljubljana and skipping small stations), as well as local lines, sometimes they even leave many of which can take you just before over the border crossingas well. It is also the last way out, if you get stuck somewhere. (stay strong<3) Of course, you can always use Flixbus or any other bus line too. But don  Border towns/ villages that might help:t worry! If you are going to Italy AUSTRIA (Jesenice, Kranjska gora, Dravograd, Slovenj Gradec, Maribor), CROATIA (TriesteBrežice, VeniceKrško, Dobova, Piran, Črnomelj, Ptuj), your best option is to hitchhike till the border city HUNGARY (SezanaMurska Sobota, Lendava, Hodoš) and ITALY (Nova Gorica, Sežana, Koper, Bovec, Vipava) Crossing from there take Slovenia to Austria : Border crossing is a bus very luxurious hitching spot, as the traffic slows down to about 10km/h (€1because of the pay toll for Karavanke tunnel, when the road is busy) so the whole highway sees you clearly. There is also plenty of space for drivers to pick you up. == Useful information ==As everywhere in Europe, it it not allowed and very dangerous to cross the highway in Slovenia.90) or a train (DonAlso be careful about crossing the red lights in Slovenian cities, you't buy ll get a ticket20-40€ fine, just hop if you get caught. Wildcamping inSlovenia is officially prohibited, but by my personal experience, that is not a big problem. As long as you don't make fires and follow basic rules, itpeople won's 10 mint mind you.) till If you want to camp close the buildings on the private property, ask the Italian village of Villa Opicinalocals. From there As long as nobody calls the police you can take plenty of buses 're good. Couchsurfing, especially in Ljubljana, works fine as well. Tips are not mandatory or expected in restaurants, but it is always nice to Trst tip, if you're happy with the service. Slovenians often tip in bars. There are 2 main words for "hi" in Slovenian. Živjo (TriesteŽ is pronouced /ˈʒeː/) is used in Ljubljana and surrondings, and continue to VeniceZdravo is dominant around Maribor. You can make a good impression making a difference between the two;) == Personal Experiences == Pls add info == Nomadwiki & Trashwiki == nomadwiki
If you are going to Zagreb, and you were not lucky enough to get a direct ride, try to get to a city called Brezice. From there take either a bus or a local train to the border village called Dobova, from which there is every two hours a cheap local train to Zagreb (€1.50).
