Another possibility is go to get [https://www.google.ca/maps/place/23+Avenue+Gowans,+Lachine,+QC+H8R+1R7/@45.442476,-73.6516226,19z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x4cc916d04e762039:0xe8584463c3195cd6 here]. Get off at Vendome metro station and take the bus 90 going west (ouest in French). Going along St Jacques street, at the fork of the road you will see a gas-station and a McD's - the bus will go left, and you should get off and go right - which is where cars going west will pass. This is still fairly in the city but if you hitchhike with a sign saying you want to go west on the highway 20, you should get a ride quite easily. It is advised to go there early and try to catch the people going from Mtl to To.
In Alexander's experience, this place gave no good results for hitchhiking during winter. Waited from 09:00AM to 02:00PM without any results. Ride sharing using Kijiji or Craigslist is recommended in such case.

One can also take the train to Gare Dorion, and walk about 15 minutes to the entrance of Highway 20. It is a good place, with plenty of place to stop and traffic lights just in front of the stop. The only problem is that most traffic is local; the first service station is just across the border in Ontario, therefore, it may be a good idea to wait for a ride to that station. Worth noting that most Ontario bound traffic leaves before noon to avoid traffic, so try get there early. Edward101277 tried to hitch this stretch and got offered a ride to Valleyfield, but hitchhiking from Valleyfield to Ontario proved difficult, so recommended to wait a while with a sign saying Ontario.
If you want to go to Ottawa, there's a great spot right before highway 40. Just continue straight past the 20 and along 'Avenue des Anciens Combattants' for about 10 minutes. For pictures of the spot, see: http://imgur.com/v2vDG and http://imgur.com/wPYQK
