This is a bit tricky but not impossible. '''Coming from the center:''' Cross the bridge that goes over the train station. There's an exhibition center (Messuhalli) on the other side of the train tracks and the road. Walk to the left after the bridge towards the road. Go over a small knee-height fence to the shoulder of the road. Walk on the side of the road a bit more to find a good hitchhiking spot, where the cars have enough space to stop. '''If this doesn't work out''', walk down the road some more until you reach a pedestrian path on your right hand side. Follow it until it goes up in a bridge to cross the motorway. Hitchhike before the bridge, because that's where the cars start speeding up.
08/09/11 : Another solution is to reach the ABC station of Vaajakoski, to the east of the city. You can hitchhike your way there by thumbs or writing "ABC" on a panel, or you can take a bus (around 2€), for exemple the bus n°3 from Matkakeskus in the city center. Once there, there's a gas station where you can ask people, or you can hitchhike with a panel, there's a nice bus stop if you're going to Kuopio, and a small platform if you're going to Lahti.
