The M1 motorway, the east coast's major thoroughfare, runs through the Gold Coast. As with many beach towns, the Gold Coast is a sprawling, car-oriented city, with the Gold Coast Highway as its main artery.
Hitchhiking out
South towards Sydney, Byron Bay
Option 1
A number of buses stop at the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and Palm Beach Avenue. From there walk west up Palm Beach Ave, through three traffic circles, and the entrance to the M1 will lead south to your left. There is a shoulder a quarter of the way up the ramp, which is probably the best place to stand so you can get traffic coming both ways off Palm Beach Avenue, although cars turning left will only have a short time to see you.
<!-- ===North towards Brisbane=Option 2 == -->==At the intersection of Ducat St with Kennedy Dr there is a BP gas station and a roundabout almost in front of it, that all cars going to M1 have to take. The exit of that roundabout to M1 is a good location, since there is good visibility and space for the cars to stop. Also, cars are moving slowly because of the roundabout.
