Vyshny Volochyok (Russian: Вышний Волочек) is a city in Russia, located in the north of the Tver Oblast region.
The city received its name from the uppermost portage on the ancient waterway from the Baltic to the Caspian Sea, called the "Route from the Varangians to the Arabs." The first hydraulic engineering system in Russia was created here. The city is built on a system of canals and islands. Hitchhikers sometimes refer to it humorously as "The Most High Svolochyok," because the M10 motorway twists through the city in a peculiar manner, often causing travelers to spend many hours trying to get out.
Currently, there is an option to bypass the city via the toll road M11.

Hitchhiking out
Northwest towards Valday, Veliky Novgorod, and Saint Petersburg via M10
Via the village of Priozyorny. Previously, city bus #4 used to go through the entire city to the northern exit.
Southeast towards Tver and Moscow via M10
Look for minibuses heading towards the Vyshnevolotsky Flax Factory and the piano factory.
Northeast towards Bezhetsk via R85
Look for a minibus to the village of Prigorodny.
To the toll motorway M11
The new toll road passes far from the city, beyond the reservoir. You need to get there via M10. Get out right after the toll booth and hitchhike beyond it, before cars accelerate onto the motorway. Hitchhiking directly on M11 is dangerous, forbidden, and ineffective.
