Hitchhiking in

The village is the end point of the popular hiking trail from Listvyanka - Bolshiye Koty - Bolshoye Goloustnoye. The full route (60 km) takes two days for prepared hikers. There is one bus per day at 17:20 (except Saturdays and Sundays) to Irkutsk. If you miss the bus, you can camp on the shore of Lake Baikal or stay at one of the tourist bases. The same tourist bases organize transfers for tourists, both their own guests and hikers on or to the trail. The road is in good condition only for 10 km from Irkutsk. After that, up to Maloye Goloustnoye, it's broken asphalt with gravel sections. From Maloye to Bolshoye Goloustnoye is only a dirt road—dusty in summer, muddy in autumn and spring, with some sections covered with gravel. Upon entering Bolshoye Goloustnoye, the central street is paved again.

Accommodation and Sleep

  • On the edge of the village, immediately after the church, there are various tourist bases, guest yurts, and private guesthouses. Immediately after the last tourist bases begins the territory of Pribaikalsky National Park. So choose whom to pay—either the tourist base or the park rangers. Tourist bases usually have firewood, electricity, and sometimes even Wi-Fi in the canteen.
  • On the territory of the St. Nicholas Church there is a bathhouse and guest houses for pilgrims and workers. You can try to talk with the priest about staying overnight in exchange for helping out.

Other useful info

  • The mentioned hiking route to Bolshiye Koty is part of the "Great Baikal Trail" (GBT). It passes through the national park "Zapovednoye Pribaikalye" and a permit must be obtained through their website: https://baikal-1.ru/local/entrance-pass/
  • There is a scenic hiking trail on the left bank of the river, near the bridge at the entrance to the village, leading up the nearest mountain (1.8 km length, +200 m elevation). The summit offers great views in all directions—of the river valley, the delta, and Lake Baikal.
  • Boat trips: In the left part of the embankment there is a bay where boats and yachts are moored. In the village there are also notices on fences with boat owners’ phone numbers.
  • Winter activities: On the main beach in winter there is a rental for skates and bicycles, but it is recommended to bring your own. Clear ice lasts from the end of January until the first spring thaw in March. After the thaw, the ice becomes matte, but it can still hold bicycles and cars until large cracks appear. During the period between ice and open water, hovercraft "Khivus" operate for transport on Lake Baikal.
