Hitchhiking out

The village is the final destination of the popular hiking trail Listvyanka - Bolshie Koty - Bolshoe Goloustnoe. The full 60 km trail takes experienced hikers about two days.

There is a bus to Irkutsk once per day at 17:20 (except Saturdays and Sundays). If you miss the bus, you can either camp on the shore of Baikal or stay in one of the tourist bases. Some of these tourist bases also offer "transfer" services for tourists, both from the village and from the trail.

The bus costs 175 RUB, BlaBlaCar 130 RUB. The road is of good quality for only the first 10 km from Irkutsk. Then up to Maloe Goloustnoe it is broken asphalt with gravel sections. From Maloe to Bolshoe Goloustnoe it's only a dirt road: dusty in summer, muddy in autumn and spring, with some gravel in places. When you enter Bolshoe Goloustnoe, the central street is paved again.

Accommodation and Sleep

  • On the edge of the village, just past the church, there is a cluster of various tourist bases, guest yurts, and private hotels. Right after the last tourist bases the territory of the Pribaikalsky National Park begins. You can choose where to pay: either the tourist base or the park rangers. The bases have firewood, electricity, and sometimes even WiFi in the dining room.
  • On the grounds of the St. Nicholas Church there is a bathhouse and guesthouses for pilgrims and workers. You may try to arrange accommodation with the priest "for work in return."

Other useful info

  • The hiking route mentioned above to Bolshie Koty is part of the "Great Baikal Trail" (BBT). It passes through the "Zapovednoe Pribaikalie" national park and you need to obtain a permit through their website: https://baikal-1.ru/local/entrance-pass/
  • Observation hill: On the left bank of the river, near the bridge at the entrance to the village, a hiking trail leads up the nearest hill. In just 1.8 km you'll climb almost 200 meters. From the summit there are excellent views in all directions—over the river valley, the delta, and Lake Baikal.
  • Boat rides: In the left part of the waterfront there is a bay with "Yaroslavets" type boats and yachts. In the village, you can find boat owners' announcements with phone numbers on fences.
  • Ice skating and cycling on the ice: On the main beach in winter there are places for renting bikes and skates, but it’s best to bring your own. The clear ice lasts from late January until the first spring thaw in March. After the thaw, the ice turns frosty, but it's still strong enough for bikes and cars until big cracks appear. When there’s water on the ice, hovercraft "Khivus" are used for transport across Baikal.
