Zadar is a city on the adriatic coast in Croatia. There many small nearby islands which can be reached by a ferry. There is also a ferry to Ancona, Italy, to Split and to Rijeka
Hitchhiking out
South (Šibenik, Split)
From the central Bus station you will have to walk the Ante Starcevića until there is a really big cross (1km). Then you turn right on to the Jadranska cesta. This road is heading to Šibenik and Split. After 200m you will find a bus stop where you can place yourself. It is not recommended to hitchhike the motorway, because there is not so much traffic (peage) and the landscape on the coastal road is much more beautiful.
* Antonopa (May 2016) Waited only for about 45 mins before a guy picked me up and drove me all the way to Split. Great spot.
* (March 2017) We are a couple with 2 big backpacks. We waited 40 min there. People don't drive too fast. The lady drove us to Šibenik.

From there, if you want to go to Zagreb, go to the péage (cestarina). There are two ways to Rijeka, one of them is the same highway, the other is along the coast.   Option 1
The street is named Zagrebačka ulica and can be easily reached by walking straight up East (leaving the sea behind) from the main bus station on Anta Starcevića or taking buses 4 or 6 from there (be sure you get into the one going the right direction! There are two bus stops on the same side of the street across the bus station, and you want the one on the East side; when not sure, ask the driver if they are going towards Supernova shopping mall, otherwise you might end up taking a long tour around Zadar). For bus 6, you want to get out at Supernova and go back to the main road (just on the side of the mall), there is a bus stop there. For bus 4, get out at Crno (the first stop when it goes out of the Zagrebačka) and get back to the road, there is a bus stop, as well. No shade, so have water to survive Balkan summer heat.
Another good option is to stand at the INA gas station on Zagrebačka, right before ul. Antuna Dobronića. You can catch both the passing traffic and ask around the gas station. You can walk there from the old town in around 45 mins. martinsltopf got a ride after approx. 25 minutes.Option 2
* I waited more than 4 hours next to Stand at/around the INA gas station on Zagrebačka, right before realizing that this road was going to a mall center calles SupernovaUl Antuna Dobronića. I moves next to You can catch both the mall’s bus stop passing traffic and got a ride after 10 mn to ask around the city of Posedarjegas station. From there I managed to get tonthe tokl station but no one would pick me and I had to sleep You can walk there. I got back to Zadar and took from the bus to Zagreb for about 12€old town in around 45 mins.

Tomasmarc stayed at the crossing between the péage and the coastal road with a sign "Rijeka" (to get the best of both) and got a lift pretty fast.
Sleeping
Hostel
There is a youth hostel in the very north of the town. The district is called Puntaminka. From the center it is a 40 minutes walk. But you can even try to hitchhike. It costs app. 12€ (90 Kuna) per night.

Wild camping
There is an abandoned campground at the end of karma(!) road (karma ulika). Just next to "tequila sunrise cafe". Locals go there to swim during the day. People sometimes pitch their tents for a few days.
- 8.8.2017. We were just told by some kind of marine officials that camping is not allowed. They took pictures of the tents and went away again. No big fuss though. The locals are very friendly and gave us figs from their garden and snaps from a suspicious little bottle. There is showers and you can use the toiler in the bar.
- 27.8.2019. I but my tent there after the sunset and got to talk with a local. He told me that no one would bother me if I stayed there and that he had seen people camping there all Please DON'T do it south of the time. Indeed I wasn’t botheredcity, you should only know that people takes walk there until lateare areas left which are contaminated with landmines.
