If you're coming from South on the RN40, don't expect more traffic from here on. Leaving Chos Malal gives you two options: 1) Continuing on RN40 towards [[Malargue]] or going back to [[Neuquen]] on RP7. Whoever gives you a lift, DO NOT get dropped off at the turnoff from the RN40 to RP7. You might get stuck there for days. If you definitely want to go to [[Malargue]], don't accept to get on cars, which will take you towards Neuquen only.
After the turnoff, RN40 gets dirty, muddy or nonexistent. Expect serious delays after severe rainfall.
=== South toward Zapala (RN40) ===
If you're coming from North on the RN40, the road is getting a lot better toward [[Zapala]]. However, traffic will still be limited. Check out Cerro Wayle Monument as a hitching spot, as some people will stop there on their way out and you might get a moment to talk to them. Try to get to [[Zapala]] directly and not get dropped off on the way, this might enharden your further travel.
