Hitchhiking out
North towards Kaitaia
Best option
Springs flat roadhouse (Great N rd Sh1, Springs flat/Kamo)
Second best option
Kensington Sports park (Douglas st and Sh1 intersection ( less northbound traffic but much closer to the centre of whangarei so not as long of a walk.
South towards Auckland
Best Option
Otaika Rd past Bunnings warehouse, opposite the Northland parts warehouse ( the is the go to spot for Hitchhiking south as it is just outside whangarei where majority of traffic will be heading towards other cities/towns and has a lot of room for vehicles to pull over including even the largest trucks which do stop occasionally).
West towards Dargaville
Best Option
Maungatapere (GAS MAUNGATAPERE) This is the best option for Hitchhiking out of whangarei on sh14, Maungatapere recently became a 50kmh zone and has plenty of space for vehicles of all sizes to pull over with great visibility even at night.
Second best option
Hospital fish and chip shop (recommended for fish and chips too). This option is within walking distance of the city center and is a great way to get a ride to the other option (Maungatapere) or even all the way to dargaville if you get lucky, avoid this spot from 3pm to 5pm as it gets very busy with commuters going home, there is plenty of space for cars to pull over, heading any further towards the west is not a good option as the next place where cars can pull over is a few kms down the road.
East towards Tutukaka
Best option
Whangarei falls in Tikipunga (worth visiting before hitching out). This is the best option the hitch east towards the coast to see some if New Zealands best beaches but It doesn't lead to anywhere else.
