I am a researcher in environmental sociology, climate change policy, and particularly how the public are involved in everyday practices that create energy demand - everyday life including travel (mobility) and work (energy use of buildings). I have worked on nuclear waste policy, renewable energy technologies, congestion charging, wind farm acceptability and more.

I was previously a full-time protester against new motorways in the UK (during the 90s) as an environmental activist, and used to hitch-hike approx 500 miles every 2 weeks in that period, up and down the UK. I have not hitched for years except in rural areas, where it still seems to work! I am researching ow-carbon, low-cost alternative means of travel including hitch-hiking. My friends Graeme Chesters and Merrick Godhaven have written 2 of the existing pieces of literature on hitch-hiking in the UK.

I am a regular host for warmshowers.org (for long distance cyclists) and couchsurfing.org (also local organiser) as a passionate believer in what I call "autonomobility", providing a free bed for people travelling the world.
