Police

I believe that the paragraph regarding law enforcement should be rewritten, as it has incorrect information and offers, in my opninin, bad advice. It is true that there are 3 main law enforcement agencies on a national level. This is about the only true information in this paragraph currently.

First, it implies that only the Douanes have the right to ask for an ID, and only if you are within 20km of the border. That is not correct : The other agencies have the authority to ask for for a proof of identity (an official ID, but it can also be a testimony from someone else). They can, and often do it anywhere on the territory, and you have to comply (see : https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contr%C3%B4le_d%27identit%C3%A9_en_France#Les_modalit%C3%A9s_juridiques_du_contr%C3%B4le_d'identit%C3%A9).

If you keep that in mind, you can easily see why going all soveregin citize an only remaining silent and asking if you are free to go is not the best advice. What I wolud advise you to do if a patrol stopping by you is to keep calm, be polite and provide them a form of official ID if they ask for it (altough they never went that far with me). Most of the time, they will ask you where are you headed, maybe a few other vague questions, remind you that hitchhiking is illegal on the highways (even if you are not on a highway at the moment), wish you a nice day and drive away. --Phalanxs (talk) 19:26, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

I fully agree with you !
feel free to push your corrections ;-)

I heard the other day from someone from France that these days hitchhiking is forbidded?? Never experienced problems but it would be a good thing to keep in mind Robino 14:19, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't believe that is so. I've never heard of it being against the law, and even Lonely Planet doesn't heavily discourage it. I've had many police vehicles pass me and was never even given a second look. Zactalk 14:42, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
It's forbidden to walk along the motorway and you might even get a ride from the cops. Happened to me once, but I didn't get a fine and they dropped me off at a gas station 10 kms further away. :) GuakaTalkCS 00:05, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

As far as i know, there is no prohibitions about hitching in france - except on the restricted access roads, i.e. expressways and motorways. Péages are also considered part of the motorway, and normally one is not allowed to sollicit ride there. But this is not really enforced - since 2004 it happened to me only once to be told to get off the tollbooth and ask for a ride on the parking nearby (what was difficult because there was no services except toilets...). But the risk is relatively low.--Daniel 12:25, 17 December 2006 (CET)

It's also oficialy illegal to hitchhike on petrol station on the motorway, but Police don't care. But there is only a small region (i don't remember if it's in the north or south of Lyon)where Police will give you a lift to the next toll, because 1 year ago one hitchhiker die crashed by a car on a petrol station, for this reason police aply the law and don't allow people hitchhiking on such places. In this region since this accident, the local authoritise made official hitchhiking spots on normal road, but i don't have much information about it. .--[[User:caminosdelmundo|caminosdelmundo]

Regions

It is obviously a necessity to include and divide France with its regions. It will pretty much ease the details and the administration of the country is regulate according to that (motorways, Police etc...). Anyhow here is the list: Bretagne, Basse-Normandie, Haute-Normandie, Picardie, Pas-de-Calais, Île-de-France, Champagne-Ardennes, Lorraine, Alsace, Franche-Comté, Bourgogne, Rhône-Alpes, Auvergne, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Langedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Aquitaine, Limousin, Centre, Pays-de-la-Loire, Poitou-Charentes, Corse ... and (DOM-TOM)... Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, Guyane (French Guyana) ... and (COM) ... Saint-Barthélémy, Saint-Martin, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, Polynésie Française (French Polynesia), New Caledonia, Mayotte, Wallis et Futuna. Maplefanta 17:44, 30 December 2007 (CET)

So, I created the Template:Regions France. This are the regions that also wikipedia handles on this page. Hope thats ok. To add this template to an article, just type {{Regions France}} at the end of your article (or at the position where you want to have this list).
