Take bus 409 to the airport, which is only 100m away from the hitchhiking point. Walk to the end of the bridge and hitch on the E70 from there.
If coming into the city, best just to explain that you need to hitch west towards Sofia and ask your ride to drop you off at a road towards it as you could be doing a lot of walking otherwise. Hitching to Varna is simple and you should be able to find someone willing to give you a ride to the west side of the city.
From here you can also hitch to Lukoil B024, a service station a little further on the A2 / E70, a great spot, where you can both hitch by the highway and ask the drivers who stop.
*Aug 2019: Went to option 1 first. Spot was kinda shady; cars are going way too fast and not enough space for drivers to stop. Went back to option 2, which is much easier to reach anyway. Still had to wait 2.5 hours to get a ride to Veliko Tarnovo.
