If you're heading '''South''' its best to do it from the southern end of Hornby just before the 50km/hr zone ends (just past the shopping malls). Post-2011 earthquake: From the city centre, take the Yellow (Y) bus line until the end. You will get dropped off at a mall called The Hub. Cross the mall, then cross the big road and you're ready to go !The place is pretty good, but as in any big city you try to get out of, this may take some time (usually not more than 20-30 minutes).You can make use of the bus lane on the left and of the traffic lights. If someone offers you a very short lift, be careful: you may end up getting stuck on a classic European-style highway entrance with very few cars if you're too close from the city. Ashburton is the closest "big" common destination and a good place to get dropped at. DO NOT accept a ride to Rolleston (Rolly) that is or Burnhan, they are in the bad spot mentioned just before..fast zone.
Heading '''West''' you could try hitching from the beginning of Yaldhurst Road at Upper Riccarton or alternatively take Bus to near the bus (or get dropped off) Caltex Russely at the Yaldhurst Road/Russley Road intersection - this is at the start of State Highway 73 but there is a really good area for cars to pull over just past not far up the intersection 73 where it's goes from two lanes to one and before they get up to highway speed.

If it is a nice day (not too hot or raining) the best spot is directly opposite Woodend Methodist Church. In case of hot or wet weather hitch from the St Barnabas Anglican Church - there is a small roof structure that can provide sun or rain shelter.
Note if you are headed highway 1 to Picton, via Kaikoura and your ride is going h7 toward Hanmer Springs you are best to get out at Amberley(best spot is near the Charles Upham statue) as the intersection of highway 1 and h7 is not a good spot to hitch North from.

Take a bus to Hornby "Hub", hitch from opposite Denton Park. Or bus to Templeton and hitch from the Trents Road intersection.
