You can find direct rides. It is possbible to hitchhike on some places on the highway. There are service- and tollstations.
== Places to avoid ==
Peshawar tends to be one off the roughest city cities of Pakistan. While driving to the Afghan border, my host got nervous and made a uturn 25 kms before the border.
== Accommodation and Sleep ==
There is a limited couchsurfing community.
If you ask around, it should be possible to pitch a tent in the New Town. There are a lot of huge villa's with gardens.
