I found my lift on the same round about but being very lucky. Better, next to the harbour, (you can see also a petrol station but don't ask there) there is alimentary security control for trucks. All trucks trasporting fish or fruit (the bests to go straight in continental europe) must pass by it and stop inside. I arrived there during spanish holiday (semana santa) that's why was pretty hard but normally should be the best. If not straight at the ferry harbour (not the big merchandise one) where cars and trucks go down, there are some trucks that doesn't cross the sea and just wait for containers. Ask them.

Traveling Charles, We used this information and hitched the ferry May 2013, it was all very helpful. We mistakenly tried arriving at night and found few trucks loading onto the ferries, so be sure to arrive between 10:00 and 19:00 for best results. We were 2 people and split on to 2 trucks as the drivers wanted to make sure we also got food tickets. Make sure to just ask drivers because we also tried getting help from the people loading the boats, which was the key on the Spanish side but was actually problematic to ask help from them on the Moroccan side. Balearia company seemed to be the best choice for boat companies.
