Trains in Thailand are very very cheap, so many hitchhikers opt for heading down to the main train station and catching a train to some place outside of the big city.
An other option that can seem a bit more stressful, but is perfectly possible is to start hitching already from the center. If your standing decently enough someone should stop within 10 min.
