There is not much to do in Spartanburg, though the locals are very friendly. It is a poor town and quite conservative. There are some cool old, graveyards and abandoned houses to explore.
If you are traveling between Atlanta and points Southwest to Western North Carolina, Virginia, or EasternTennesee, you can take 81 85 north out of Atlanta until you hit 26 at Spartanburg. The first exit west on 26 after it intersects 81 85 will take you to two gas stations. There is some local traffic here, but also many people going north into Ashevilleand beyond. The locals are friendly, though conservative. They even drove Owen to Asheville just because they 'had nothing better to do' and treated him to beer.
